Two years after it premièred inside the Salle Pauline-Boutal, a bloodsucking romantic musical written by and starring Sharon Bajer and Duncan Cox is alive again.

Presented by Rainbow Stage and the Keep Theatre Company, Afterlight, which earned a 4 1/2 star review from the Free Press in 2023, tells the story of a 500-year-old vampire (Cox) who finds unexpected and meaningful kinship with an insomniac 85-year-old woman (Bajer) who’s hungry for human connection.

A comedic two-hander with an all-original soundtrack, Afterlight is returning to the Salle Pauline Boutal — named for the longtime artistic director of Théâtre Cercle Molière — in refined form, says Bajer.

Duncan Cox and Sharon Bajer return to revamp the musical Afterlight.

You might call it a revamp.

“Part of the reason we wanted to do this again was that in the development of new musicals, you learn so much by doing the first production, and we certainly learned a lot,” says Bajer, whose most recent stage performances include a hospice volunteer in Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s staging of Casey and Diana.

About five months ago, Bajer says she and Cox, who composed the music, reunited to watch archival footage of their 2023 production, snipping away excess dialogue and tightening up the first act after taking an objective look at the original.

“We wanted to really pace it up,” she says.

Distance from her character, Wanda, also gave Bajer a chance to deepen her understanding of the character’s worldview and personal troubles, which stem from the loss of her spouse and most of the people she knew and loved — a similar struggle experienced by Cox’s Razvan, who remembers the taste of Ivan the Terrible’s blood with a blend of nostalgia and a bite of sadness.

“I think like any project, when you get to leave it for a few years, it always deepens when you return. There’s something in returning to these friends that allows them to sink a little deeper into your bones,” says Bajer, who was announced this week as the director of The Perfect Man, a new musical from Sara Kreindler set for a May 2026 run at the Gargoyle Theatre.

Running until Nov. 2, Afterlight is directed by Jillian Willems, musically directed by Paul De Gurse and choreographed by Joseph Sevillo, with production design by Anika Binding.

Wait times for MRIs getting worse in Brandon, Dauphin

Rylee Gerrard 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

BRANDON — Wait times for MRI scans have surged in the Prairie Mountain Health region during the last two years.

Despite a campaign promise by the NDP in September 2023 to increase the number of allied health professionals capable of administering diagnostic imaging in northern and rural areas, wait times for MRIs have increased dramatically in Brandon and Dauphin.

Median imaging wait times tripled at Dauphin Regional Health Centre between 2024 and 2026, increasing from eight to 24 weeks, according to the province’s wait time dashboard.

The Brandon Regional Health Centre median wait times for MRI scans more than doubled during the same period, from nine to 23 weeks.

Fatal stabbing of Ukrainian newcomer left family shattered

Erik Pindera 6 minute read Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026

A man who fatally stabbed a Ukrainian newcomer in “a random, unprovoked, and senseless act of violence” on the street has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

Ethan Gladu, 22, was found guilty of manslaughter in February in the December 20, 2023 killing of Ivan Rubanik, a 46-year-old father of two who had fled to Canada for a better life with his family several months before.

Gladu, then 19, randomly stabbed Rubanik shortly before 8 a.m., near Talbot Avenue and Watt Street, as the victim was walking to work that morning. He died of blood loss soon after.

“The people of Winnipeg, or any community, should feel confident that they can go about their business, walk to work, support their family, and carry on with their lives without being attacked,” said Court of King’s Bench Justice Kenneth Champagne on Thursday afternoon as he sentenced the killer.

Roadside giants towering symbols of Canada’s quirkiness

Jen Zoratti 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

Could you imagine a Canada without Mr. PG repping Prince George, B.C.? Or the Big Nickel in Sudbury? Or, my personal favourite, Happy Rock in Gladstone?

Earlier this summer, CBC’s Cost of Living looked at the economics of these giant roadside attractions — of which there are more than 1,500 in Canada — and the cost of keeping them.

Some are falling into disrepair — this is why public art funding is necessary, by the way, not just for construction, but maintenance — and some towns are weighing whether or not that money is better spent elsewhere.

The main character of the story: Tyra the Tyrannosaurus, the rather literal symbol of Drumheller, Alta., a.k.a. the Dinosaur Capital of the World since 2000, who could be facing extinction after the lease agreement between the town and the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce ends in 2029.
