MOON ALERT Avoid shopping or making important decisions from 3:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. today. After that the moon moves from Aquarius into Pisces.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Good news! The sun enters your sign today to stay for one month, recharging your batteries for the rest of the year. This makes you stronger, healthier and more optimistic. (You’re juiced!) You will easily attract favourable circumstances and important people to you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

In the month ahead, work in the wings to hatch plans and strategize what you want your new year (birthday to birthday) to be. Define and write down some goals. If you do this, you will more likely make them reality. Steer your future, don’t just react to it.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re entering a wonderfully popular six-week period. Enjoy schmoozing with others. People want to see you and vice versa. Your participation in clubs, groups and organizations will be appreciated. Tell others about your future plans.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is the only time all year when the sun, high in your chart, throws a spotlight on you. (This means other people notice you more than usual, especially bosses, parents and VIPs.) Please note — this great lighting is flattering! Therefore, go after what you want.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Grab every chance to travel, study and explore more of the world. You want adventure, thrills and inspirational, new knowledge. (“Don’t harsh my buzz, man.”) Sign up for courses. Be a tourist in your own city. Do something out of the ordinary.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The month ahead is the perfect time to clean up your act. Focus on bills, taxes, debt, inheritances, insurance matters and shared property. Get as much done as possible. (You’ll be surprised how easy it will be.) Sometimes things just fall in place.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The Sun is your source of energy, and it’s as far away from you as it gets all year. This is why you’ll need more sleep in the next six weeks. Respect this. Get some extra zzzz’s. You will also learn how to better relate to partners and close friends.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

In the month ahead, you’ll be seized by a desire to be efficient, effective and productive. You’ll be a veritable tornado of activity, cleaning up loose ends. Not only that, you want to get healthier. The whole enchilada!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Vacations, love affairs, romance, the arts, the theatre, sports events and playful activities with children all beckon in the next month. You want good times, flirtations and a chance to express your creativity. Yee-haw!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Home, family and your private life will be your focus for the next six weeks. Time spent with parents will be significant. Many of you will tackle old repairs at home. Because you’re still in party mode, many of you will entertain at home as well. A cosy time ahead!

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The pace of your days will accelerate in the next month. Suddenly, you’ve got things to do, places to go, people to see. (You’ll be running around with an outboard motor on your butt.) You have a strong desire to talk to others or enlighten them about something. Time with siblings will be significant.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Now your attention turns to money, cash flow and major expenditures. You’re counting your pennies! You’re also looking for ways to boost your earnings. Because of Mercury retrograde, you’ll be most successful if you retrace your steps and apply at the places you have already contacted or worked.

If your birthday is today

Actress Rachel Blanchard (1976) shares your birthday. You’re ambitious and hard-working, which is why you achieve your goals. You’re focused and maintain a busy pace because you set yourself high standards of excellence. Many of you have an appealing purity that is childlike which, ironically, hides your forceful character. In your year ahead, something you’ve been involved in for about nine years will end or diminish, to make room for something new.

Ottawa to spend $5M on HIV self-testing kits

Scott Billeck 4 minute read 4:21 PM CDT

Manitoba, which has the country’s highest HIV rate, will receive a significant share of $5 million in federal funding for HIV testing and supports.

The province declared a public health emergency over rising HIV rates in May. Manitoba’s HIV rate is more than three times the national average. In 2024, the province had 19.5 cases per 100,000 people, compared with 5.5 nationally.

Dr. Joss Reimer, Canada’s chief public health officer, said Thursday at the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network in Winnipeg, said one in 10 Canadians who have HIV do not know their status.

“Knowing one’s HIV status enables access to prevention options, or for those who test positive, early treatment to improve outcomes and prevent transmission,” Reimer said.

Grieving families, local leaders want review of Interlake intersection after teens die in crash

Chris Kitching 8 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 8, 2026

A two-vehicle crash that killed four teenage friends in the Interlake Sunday night prompted outpourings of grief in several communities and calls for safety improvements at the intersection, which was also the site of a death in July.

Recent high school graduates Maya Borsa and Chloe Vermette, both 18, were identified by their families as victims of the collision at Highway 8 and Provincial Road 229, just west of Winnipeg Beach.

“(Chloe) was a very bubbly, loving personality. Always giving, always caring. Her friends meant the world to her,” said her mother, Veronique Vermette, who struggled to comprehend the tragedy when she went to the scene Monday. “We sat in the rain for hours, and it blew my mind that four lives were taken.”

The teens’ parents are waiting for RCMP to provide more information about the cause of the crash. Chloe, who graduated from Windsor Park Collegiate in Winnipeg in July, was driving one of the vehicles, her mother said.

South Winnipeg neighbourhood will be first to go geothermal

Chris Kitching 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 7:28 PM CDT

A new neighbourhood in south Winnipeg will be Manitoba’s first to use a shared, large-scale geothermal system to heat and cool hundreds of homes over coming decades.

The province is giving up to $4 million to the developers of Southwood Circle, just north of the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus, for a district geothermal system as part of the NDP’s goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“It means a whole neighbourhood can tap into geothermal, which means low-carbon heating and cooling for at least 1,000 homes,” Premier Wab Kinew said at a news conference Wednesday.

Geothermal systems, equipped with pumps and pipes, use underground temperatures to heat and cool one or more buildings. Proponents point to long-term energy and cost savings compared with conventional heating and cooling systems.

Childfree Winnipeg group gives women without kids a place to gather

AV Kitching 5 minute read Yesterday at 4:48 PM CDT

Katelyn Sawatzky founded Childfree Winnipeg Women in 2021 to bring together women who don’t have kids — be it by choice or circumstance — and do not plan on raising children.

The group is designed to help them share experiences and build meaningful friendships.

The community welcomes cisgender, straight, transgender, bisexual and lesbian women. Parents, including empty nesters and men, are turned away.

“Our group is a safe space where women can hang out with other women without being asked when you’re going to have kids or why you don’t have kids … where you don’t feel like you have to validate or defend your choices in any way, because everyone gets it,” Sawatzky says.
