Hey there, time traveller!

MOON ALERT Briefly avoid shopping or making important decisions from 10 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The new moon occurs in Gemini at 10:02 a.m. At 12:34 a.m. the moon moves from Gemini into Cancer.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Today’s new moon is one of the best days of the year to consider how well you communicate. Do you listen when others speak? Do others understand what you mean? According to research, only about half of our intended meaning is actually getting back and forth. (Please read this again.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Every new moon is an opportunity to make resolutions. The new moon this month is your chance to focus on earnings, possessions and your assets in general. What does your picture look like? What would you like it to look like? What can you do?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The only new moon all year in your sign is taking place today, which makes it the perfect time to take a serious look in the mirror. Are you dated in your appearance? Do you look interesting and inviting to approach? Think about your image.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Your year ahead is going to be more spiritual, which is why it’s interesting that today’s new moon urges you to speculate on your spiritual values. For starters, what are they? Do you feel this way inclined?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Friendship is important to health, enjoyment of life and happiness. Today’s new moon urges you to give thought to your future dreams and how they can become a reality. It also urges you to consider the role friendship plays in your life.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The new moon this month is at the top of your chart prompting you to consider the life direction in which you’re headed. For starters, are you going in the direction you want? Is it the direction you chose or someone else? Don’t drift along willy-nilly; think about where you are headed!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

What further education or training could you get to improve your job skills and enrich your life in general? To broaden your horizons, which would you prefer — signing up for a course or travelling somewhere? After all, you want to live every day you have left to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

“I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go.” Once a year the new moon urges you to give serious thought to your debt; that day has arrived. Figure out exactly how much you owe and how much you own. Get the picture. (Information is power.) What can you do to reduce this debt?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Today the new moon is opposite your sign, which means this is your chance (the only one all year) to think about how you can improve partnerships and your closest friendships. What are three things you might do?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Each new moon is a chance to make a resolution and this month’s new moon is the only new moon all year that focuses on your relationships and your health. What can you do to improve either area? Or both?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today’s new moon is your best chance all year to think about how you balance play and work in your life. Do you enjoy flirtations? Do you enjoy hobbies or social get-togethers? Do you enjoy sports and playful times with children? Do you play?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Use the energy of today’s new moon to think how you can improve your home and your relationships with family members. Every new moon is the perfect time to begin new activities or initiate a new outlook.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor/comedian Jean Dujardin (1972) shares your birthday today. You are persuasive and always very involved with others. (You don’t take a back seat to anything.) You have a talent for motivating others and you can use this to bring about change. You are hard-working, but must guard against burnout. You are capable of enormous dedication and perseverance. In the year ahead, an important decision will rise. Choose wisely.

Brandon senior hockey player files suit against opponent, league, Hockey Manitoba over serious injuries, lost income

Morgan Modjeski 3 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

A Brandon man is taking a fellow hockey player and two sport organizations to court after he was seriously injured on the ice, alleging it caused him hardship and lost income.

In 2024, Devon Leblanc played for the Virden Oil Kings, a senior amateur team in the Tiger Hills Hockey League, which is a member of the Hockey Manitoba association.

Leblanc’s age is not made clear in the court filing, but an online roster suggests he’s 38.

Leblanc alleges Bryce Enns, a member of the Killarney Shamrocks, bodychecked and assaulted him during a game between the two teams on Nov. 28, 2024.

Winnipeg soldiers help search and rescue efforts in Wainwright

Kelly-Anne Riess 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:39 PM CDT

Eleven military search and rescue technicians from Winnipeg were deployed to Wainwright, Alta., following the fire that killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during a live-fire training exercise Saturday.

It was the largest mobilization of SAR techs, elite primary-care paramedics in the Royal Canadian Air Force, in recent memory, a military spokesperson told the Free Press.

Every SAR tech available from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron, located at 17 Wing Winnipeg — even those off duty — were sent to CFB Wainwright.

The technicians, who are trained to jump from aircraft into extreme environments, parachuted onto the scene from a CC-130H Hercules airplane to provide care for those injured in the fast-moving grass fire that had engulfed a training area.

Waters remain murky in uncharted Hellebuyck trade request territory

Ken Wiebe 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:14 AM CDT

ST. LOUIS — The thing about being in uncharted waters is that the answer to the next question isn’t always readily apparent either above or below the surface.

Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel has been doing his best to ensure the upcoming two-game road trip against Central Division opponents doesn’t include a three-ring circus. But with news coming over the weekend that the suspension for goalie Connor Hellebuyck is set to expire on Friday, the club has to prepare for the next step in that process.

The problem, as Arniel conceded during his session on Monday afternoon before the team departed for Missouri, is that some of the hypotheticals need to be eliminated from the equation before the proper response can be determined.

“When it comes to Helly’s scenario, honestly I don’t really have a lot of information,” said Arniel. “I know everybody knows (about) Friday. That’s all we know.”

Winnipeg business closure scare leads Hydro to reschedule planned outage

Free Press staff 2 minute read Updated: 8:19 PM CDT

Manitoba Hydro has cancelled a planned River Heights neighbourhood outage after a miscommunication led to area businesses fearing unexpected closure.

Hydro had planned to shut down power along Lanark and Renfrew streets between Corydon Avenue and John Brebeuf Place on Friday.

Overhead electrical maintenance work can only be done with the power off, during the day, for safety reasons, Hydro spokesman Peter Chura said. It chose Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. because St. John Brebeuf School had an in-service day.

However, the affected area houses a strip of businesses including a Royal Bank of Canada, eateries, shops, services such as physiotherapy and a medical centre.

Police HQ report ‘outrageous’: Kinew

Joyanne Pursaga 6 minute read Yesterday at 6:18 PM CDT

Premier Wab Kinew says public inquiry findings that taxpayers were overcharged more than $40 million for the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters project and two city leaders broke the public trust are “outrageous.”

Inquiry commissioner Garth Smorang’s report, which was released Monday, concluded former mayor Sam Katz “violated the public trust” and council code of conduct, while the city’s former chief administrative officer Phil Sheegl suffered from a “complete lack of a moral compass.”

Smorang also found the city was overcharged $43.3 million for the project, with $42 million of that going to key contractor Caspian Projects.

“It’s outrageous that people who were elected betrayed the public here in the city. It’s outrageous that there were people in business who ripped you off, ripped me off — I was paying property taxes in Winnipeg at the time — and ripped all of us off to the tune of $43.3 million. That’s crazy,” said Kinew.
