Gas-pressurized lift supports, or “gas struts,” are the most common way for automakers to keep tailgates and liftgate glass raised. The struts also aid in opening these components.

With time and age, the pressurized gas — used to provide the force that extends the cylinder out of the strut body — will leak out, and the effectiveness and weight capacity of the strut will diminish. It can be a safety issue, as cold temperatures have an appreciable effect on gas pressure, so a strut (or pair of struts) that seemed to do the job well enough in warmer weather might suddenly prove insufficient to hold up a heavy hood or tailgate on cooler day. An unexpected closure could prove a nuisance, or it could cause significant injury if your head or hand is in the way.

Fortunately, in most cases, non-power-operated struts are easy to replace. Better yet, aftermarket replacements exist as an alternative to dealer parts.

With the lift support removed, you can more clearly see both the retainer clip inside the socket and the ball stud. This is a typical setup, however some struts use bolts and eyelets rather than ball studs, while others will require that you unscrew the ball stud from the vehicle body and/or supported component.

Changing any of these units is far easier with an assistant there to support the weight of the lifted component. While it’s true that with some creativity and caution it can be done solo, make no mistake; even a small strut can support a surprising amount of weight.

Gas struts are usually held in place by one of three methods: bolts and eyelets, ball studs and clips, or threaded ball studs. The latter is generally the most awkward to deal with as it requires loosening and unthreading the studs from the vehicle’s body and the corresponding body part while they’re still captive in sockets at the ends of the strut. Care must be taken when installing the new ball studs not to cross-thread them.

Bolt and eyelet is self-explanatory; there are holes at the ends of the strut, and bolts go through them. The most popular style is ball stud and clip. There are retaining clips that must be pried off with a small screwdriver or pick before the strut’s sockets can be disengaged from the balls. Reinstallation is as quick and easy as snapping the new strut onto the existing ball studs.

Unless otherwise indicated, struts should always be installed in the same orientation as the originals, usually rod downwards when closed.

Salvation Army calls on Winnipeggers to donate merchandise as sales soar

Kelly-Anne Riess 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

The Salvation Army is taking donated merchandise from other regions to stock its Winnipeg thrift stores as increasing sales outpace local donations.

Retail activity at the charity’s eight Winnipeg locations grew more than 10 per cent year over year during several months, from January through April, and again in June.

Although local donations remain strong, they haven’t kept pace with demand, prompting the organization to supplement inventory with merchandise from elsewhere.

Ted Troughton, managing director of the Salvation Army’s thrift store operations, said rising living costs are bringing in new customers.

Police HQ report ‘outrageous’: Kinew

Joyanne Pursaga 6 minute read 6:18 PM CDT

Premier Wab Kinew says public inquiry findings that taxpayers were overcharged more than $40 million for the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters project and two city leaders broke the public trust are “outrageous.”

Inquiry commissioner Garth Smorang’s report, which was released Monday, concluded former mayor Sam Katz “violated the public trust” and council code of conduct, while the city’s former chief administrative officer Phil Sheegl suffered from a “complete lack of a moral compass.”

Smorang also found the city was overcharged $43.3 million for the project, with $42 million of that going to key contractor Caspian Projects.

“It’s outrageous that people who were elected betrayed the public here in the city. It’s outrageous that there were people in business who ripped you off, ripped me off — I was paying property taxes in Winnipeg at the time — and ripped all of us off to the tune of $43.3 million. That’s crazy,” said Kinew.

Robert Gregoire is no longer permitted to teach in the River East Transcona School Division or elsewhere in the province after he was found to have called a student “my beautiful” and “princess,” among other pet names he used in online communications over multiple years.

New consent resolution agreements — public documents outlining agreed-upon facts and consequences in disciplinary cases — reveal the men in both cases repeatedly engaged in boundary-crossing behaviour.
