MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Aries.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Something sudden or unexpected could impact banking situations, an inheritance or anything you share with someone else. It might be a sudden gift or a favour? Unfortunately, it might also be a cancellation of something. Yikes!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

A partnership or close friendship will experience an upset today. It could be pleasant. (“For me? How thoughtful!”) Or it might be unpleasant. (“Whaaat? Are you kidding me?”) Be ready for anything. Some of you will meet someone new and unusual — a real character.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Expect to be surprised by something concerning your health, your pet or your job. For example, a co-worker might surprise you. Perhaps a new co-worker will arrive at your workplace or someone will suddenly quit? A work-related romance might begin. Could be anything. Protect your pet against accidents.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Romantic relationships will experience a few surprises today. There might be disappointments and sudden arguments. Alternatively, you might discover love at first sight? Perhaps a surprise invitation will delight? Parents should be vigilant about their kids to avoid accidents.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Be aware because something unexpected might happen at home today. (It might be wise to stock the fridge.) For starters, something beautiful might get broken. “Oh no!” Or unexpected company might drop by. A family spat could occur. However, this surprise could be the reverse? Someone might give you a gift or do a favour for you. (Fingers crossed.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

A sudden chance for a short trip or a visit with siblings and relatives might delight you. Alternatively, you might suddenly have an argument with a neighbour or relative. Something in your immediate surroundings might please you or be broken. Expect a surprise in your daily surroundings.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Keep an eye on your money and your possessions today. It’s a tricky day. You might find money; you might lose money. Or you might suddenly receive a gift? Perhaps something you own might be lost, damaged or stolen? Your earnings might suddenly change? (Gulp.) Stay tuned.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Venus in your sign is opposite unpredictable Uranus, so something unexpected can impact your closest relationships. It might be lovely and favourable. Or it might be an argument. Be aware this is a day full of surprises and stay on your toes.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Something out of the blue and unexpected could change your day today. It might be something private only you know about. However, fear not because this also could be something pleasant. A little dream come true? Take it easy and be aware and mindful. Always hope for the best.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

A friend might surprise you today by saying or doing something you least expect. Hopefully, it will be pleasant. (There’s a chance it won’t be.) Or perhaps you will meet someone unusual today? A real character. Likewise, something to do with a group or an organization might surprise you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Be alert today because bosses, parents, teachers and the police might suddenly do something you least expect. “Busted!” Yes, it could be unfavourable. But it also might be unexpected praise, a raise or a promotion? Stay positive. Always expect a miracle.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Sudden opportunities to travel might drop into your lap today. In fact, this is highly likely. Some of you might also suddenly strike up a romance with someone who is different or from another culture. Admittedly, the opposite might happen and a relationship might suddenly suffer from an argument.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg (1957) shares your birthday. You are hard-working and a gifted problem-solver. You’re a born leader who wants to make the world a better place. This year has been about socializing and enjoying your life. In 2024, it’s time to work and get productive. Keep things simple. Stay grounded and levelheaded.

Salvation Army calls on Winnipeggers to donate merchandise as sales soar

Kelly-Anne Riess 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

The Salvation Army is taking donated merchandise from other regions to stock its Winnipeg thrift stores as increasing sales outpace local donations.

Retail activity at the charity’s eight Winnipeg locations grew more than 10 per cent year over year during several months, from January through April, and again in June.

Although local donations remain strong, they haven’t kept pace with demand, prompting the organization to supplement inventory with merchandise from elsewhere.

Ted Troughton, managing director of the Salvation Army’s thrift store operations, said rising living costs are bringing in new customers.

Waters remain murky in uncharted Hellebuyck trade request territory

Ken Wiebe 4 minute read Updated: 10:14 AM CDT

ST. LOUIS — The thing about being in uncharted waters is that the answer to the next question isn’t always readily apparent either above or below the surface.

Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel has been doing his best to ensure the upcoming two-game road trip against Central Division opponents doesn’t include a three-ring circus. But with news coming over the weekend that the suspension for goalie Connor Hellebuyck is set to expire on Friday, the club has to prepare for the next step in that process.

The problem, as Arniel conceded during his session on Monday afternoon before the team departed for Missouri, is that some of the hypotheticals need to be eliminated from the equation before the proper response can be determined.

“When it comes to Helly’s scenario, honestly I don’t really have a lot of information,” said Arniel. “I know everybody knows (about) Friday. That’s all we know.”

Wesmen setter Tristan Arnold ready to meet the challenge

Joshua Frey-Sam 7 minute read 5:56 PM CDT

In a group that features some intriguing unknowns, Tristan Arnold is a certainty for the Winnipeg Wesmen.

The fifth-year setter and team captain enters his final men’s volleyball season as the unquestioned starter for the first time after spending most of his university career buried behind some talented players, then promoted briefly before bouncing between the bench and the floor.

It’s easy to see why the Glenlawn product is stoked for the upcoming campaign. This opportunity didn’t come without challenging his patience and some questions about his belonging in the sport he’s played from a young age.

“I’ve worked really hard to continue to play volleyball,” Arnold told the Free Press Tuesday. “There’s been a couple of times throughout my career where I’ve thought about packing it in, but I was just too committed to the boys, too committed to whoever I was playing for at the time.”

Winnipeg soldiers help search and rescue efforts in Wainwright

Kelly-Anne Riess 4 minute read Updated: 6:39 PM CDT

Eleven military search and rescue technicians from Winnipeg were deployed to Wainwright, Alta., following the fire that killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during a live-fire training exercise Saturday.

It was the largest mobilization of SAR techs, elite primary-care paramedics in the Royal Canadian Air Force, in recent memory, a military spokesperson told the Free Press.

Every SAR tech available from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron, located at 17 Wing Winnipeg — even those off duty — were sent to CFB Wainwright.

The technicians, who are trained to jump from aircraft into extreme environments, parachuted onto the scene from a CC-130H Hercules airplane to provide care for those injured in the fast-moving grass fire that had engulfed a training area.

Dobson up against two tech types in St. James council race

Malak Abas 6 minute read 5:19 PM CDT

Two tech-savvy newcomers to civic politics are taking on Shawn Dobson, the incumbent city councillor in St. James.

Tyler Crichton, a senior project manager for a corporate IT company, and Kelly Ryback, a retired manager with Bell MTS, are hoping to oust Dobson, who is seeking a second term in the ward.

Dobson has a long resumé as a candidate; he ran unsuccessfully in the former St. Charles ward in 2002, 2006 and 2010 before winning that council seat in 2014. He lost his bid for a second term in 2018 in St. James to then-councillor and current Mayor Scott Gillingham in 2018.

When Gillingham jumped into the 2022 mayoral race, Dobson secured the St. James seat.

Jets out of tune against Blues

Ken Wiebe 7 minute read 11:03 PM CDT

ST. LOUIS – The issue is no longer limited to secondary scoring for the Winnipeg Jets.

Although they continue to be far too reliant on the top line for production, the Jets have suddenly been limited to not enough goals in a more general sense.

The latest example was a 2-1 loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center.

The Jets battled hard in this Central Division duel, but they’ve scored 24 goals in nine games (2.67 goals per game) and have one victory during the past five games after a 3-0-1 start. One of those losses did come in overtime (1-3-1).
