MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping or important decisions from 10:15 a.m. until 3 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Scorpio into Sagittarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

You might feel sympathetic and supportive to someone, which is why you will want to help them out in a practical or financial way. Be aware of the limitations of the moon alert. (See above.) Avoid important decisions during that time. Be helpful, but don’t give away the farm.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is an excellent day for a heart-to-heart conversation with a close friend, partner or spouse. You can have an honest exchange with someone, which will be meaningful. The trick is to avoid agreeing to anything important during the moon alert. (See above.)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This morning you might want to help a friend; or conversely, you might seek someone’s help, especially at work or pertaining to your health. After the moon alert is over (see above), a discussion with a partner or close friend might improve things in a major way.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Explore your creative potential this morning because you’re in touch with your muse. (In fact, creative projects are always excellent to explore during any moon alert.) Later in the day, look for ways to introduce reforms to your work or to improve your health.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

A family member might need your help, or perhaps you will make an appeal to a family member for assistance. Either way, you feel sympathetic towards relatives. After the moon alert is over, enjoy social opportunities. Accept invitations to schmooze or party.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This morning your idealism is aroused along with your imagination. You might spend time daydreaming or being lost in a fantasy world. This is a very creative time for writing and exploring the arts. After the moon alert is over, you might want to make home improvements.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Be careful with financial decisions or shopping because in the morning, you might be tempted to buy something impractical, but elegant or luxurious. Then comes the moon alert. Bad time to spend money. However, after the alert is over, you will be decisive.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a lovely day to schmooze with others because you feel warm, friendly and sympathetic. Enjoy casual outings, sporting events and fun activities with kids. Once the moon alert is over, you’ll be resourceful and see new ways to use your assets and possessions.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You might feel a bit reclusive this morning. Some will seek out opportunities to meditate or enjoy private moments. However, after the moon alert is over, the moon moves into your sign, which will heighten your emotional energy in a big way. Your luck will improve as well. Bonus.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

A warm connection with a friend or a member of a group might be meaningful to you. Nevertheless, during the moon alert, do not agree to anything important; wait until it is over. Later in the day, you will welcome opportunities to enjoy some privacy.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This morning you’re high-viz. People notice you. In fact, some people know personal details about your life. During the moon alert, do not volunteer for anything or make important decisions. Afterwards, enjoy schmoozing with friends and groups.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Feelings of escapism are strong this morning. You might want to travel or explore a new world through the internet, film or books. You will also enjoy talking to people from different backgrounds. After the moon alert is over, you might get the attention of bosses or authority figures. Someone will listen to you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, musician Eric Idle (1943) shares your birthday. You are observant. You approach life with a slow, steady determination. You are polite, sensitive and honest. This year is about work and building foundations in your life, both physical and external as well as internal structures. You will thrive and will accomplish much.

Supportive housing operator sued after man with dementia walks away

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

The Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba is suing a health services company after a man with dementia under its care allegedly wandered away from an apartment it operates for vulnerable people and was later found face down in a puddle — unresponsive, hypothermic and severely injured.

The public trustee — a provincial government agency that, among other duties, makes financial and personal care decisions for vulnerable adults who cannot do so themselves — filed the lawsuit against Cambridge Health Inc. and a related numbered company in the Court of King’s Bench earlier this month.

The agency did so on behalf of a now-38-year-old man, who has been under its care since 2018, as a result of his frontotemporal dementia. The disease often starts in mid-life, rather than old age, as is the case with most other forms of dementia.

The lawsuit alleges the man, who resided at a Henderson Highway apartment complex where Cambridge Health operated a supportive residence for people with complex behavioural health issues, was in a common area of the home at about 4:30 p.m. on April 3 last year.

MOON ALERT: Caution! Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and major decisions all day until 7:30 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Virgo into Libra.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Be careful, because most of this day is a moon alert, which can promote creative, outside-of-the-box thinking. However, it can also promote unrealistic, crazy decisions. Write down your imaginative ideas. Don’t act until the moon alert is over. (See above.)

‘Huge resource gaps’: judge shortage leads to circuit court cuts

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2026

A shortage of judges is forcing Manitoba’s provincial court to slash sittings across the province.

The court announced in a notice to the profession Wednesday that it will be reducing the number of annual court sittings at nine rural circuit locations and St. Boniface provincial court in Winnipeg by 68 sittings, effective April 1, 2027.

The reductions are necessary to balance “access to justice needs with the complement of judicial resources currently insufficient to maintain the current court schedule,” said the notice, signed by provincial court Chief Judge Ryan Rolston.

Affected circuit courts include Altona, Arborg, Beausejour, Easterville, Cranberry Portage, Lundar, Grand Rapids, Moose Lake, and Pine Falls.

‘We feel lucky — and a bit traumatized’: Tornado confirmed in River Heights Sunday

Malak Abas 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:10 PM CDT

Tanner Lemieux wasn’t surprised to learn the violent winds that tore through River Heights and reached their peak near his home Sunday night have been classified as a tornado.

While driving back to his Lindsay Street home from a shopping trip with his wife Sunday, it became clear they were not in the middle of an ordinary thunderstorm when rain and wind started coming from every direction and hit every side of their truck.

The forceful wind made it impossible for him to open his door after they had parked. He climbed through the window, over the top of his vehicle, and the couple struggled to fight the whipping winds to make it into the house.

“As we were running in, the wind started pulling me backwards out of the door,” he told the Free Press while cleaning debris from his yard Thursday.
