The 10 largest stock markets in the world, Canada appreciated the most, more than 40 per cent. … Its bond market is also doing great, partially because the inflation rate in Canada, unlike the Eurozone or America, is actually trending lower, and is outperforming both the Eurozone and the U.S.”

Judge dials up two years’ probation for ‘prolific’ 911 harasser

A “prolific” 911 caller has been sentenced to two years of supervised probation after admitting to calling emergency services nearly 200 times when there was no emergency.

Kenneth Jarvis, 53, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of making repeated harassing phone calls between November 2021 and April of this year.

“Mr. Jarvis is a prolific caller to emergency services, generating numerous unfounded calls for service and this was causing a strain on Winnipeg Police Service officers tasked to attend to determine what was going on,” Crown attorney Nancy Fazenda told provincial court Judge Robert Heinrichs.

Jarvis was arrested in April and released on bail, then rearrested and taken into custody June 21 when he again called 911 without cause. Jarvis was arrested in possession of crack cocaine.

City charter ties council’s hands in wake of criminal allegations against Transcona councillor

In the wake of additional criminal charges laid against Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt, several council members say the city should explore options to impose leaves of absence on elected officials who face serious allegations in the future.

Wyatt, 56, was charged Monday with sexual assault and administering a noxious thing with intent to aggrieve or annoy in relation to an October 2023 incident. The councillor was previously charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance in March, based on allegations tied to a 2025 gathering.

Under the City of Winnipeg charter, a provincial law, a member of city council automatically forfeits their seat if they are convicted of certain serious criminal offences. It does not apply if they are simply charged.

Mayor Scott Gillingham and others have urged Wyatt to step away from his city hall duties voluntarily, while Gillingham has also suggested the province review the legislation.

RCMP investigating four-year-old girl’s death, two younger girls’ injuries in home on First Nation

RCMP are investigating after a four-year-old girl died in suspicious circumstances at a home in Long Plain First Nation over the weekend.

Paramedics called Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers at about 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, asking for assistance at a home where the girl was reported as injured and in medical distress.

Officers helped paramedics with emergency treatment, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other girls — a one-year-old and a two-year-old — were also found injured at the home. Paramedics took both to hospital. One of the girls was in critical condition, while the other was stable. Both are now stable.
