MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The moon is in Gemini.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Today is a mix between optimism and almost a feeling of guilt about what you should be doing. Lighten up. We all “should be doing” more, but it’s totally OK to be doing the best you can. Basically, you’re in a positive frame of mind, so enjoy your day.

Singer Rod Stewart turns 80 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You might have excellent moneymaking ideas, which is not surprising because you are the financial wizard of the zodiac. You can practically mint money in your backyard. Nevertheless, someone older or a member of a group might be critical. (You can’t please everyone.)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You feel upbeat and happy as well as sympathetic and generous to others. The world is your oyster. Even your health feels vigorous. Later in the day, a boss, parent or someone in authority might rain on your parade. (This is nothing you can’t handle.)

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You have a warm feeling in your tummy, which is why travel appeals, as does a chance to meet new and different people. You’re also happy to be low-key and work alone or behind the scenes. Rules and regulations might discourage you. And so it goes.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a popular day for you. In particular, you will enjoy shmoozing with friends and interacting with groups, clubs and organizations. Admittedly, later in the day, the restrictions of shared finances or differing values might be a challenge. Nevertheless, you will remain optimistic.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re high-viz in a positive way. People see you as upbeat, joyful and generous. Many will admire you. Nevertheless, duties and obligations connected with a partner, spouse or close friend cannot be ignored. Don’t worry, you can handle this. Enjoy good times.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Travel plans and opportunities are exciting. You’re keen to see ways to expand your world, if not through travel, then by learning or exploring opportunities in medicine, the law, higher education, publishing or the media. So many possibilities. But first, take care of work obligations.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You feel rich because you see ways to benefit from the wealth and resources of others, perhaps a partner or spouse. Some of you might inherit. Whatever happens, you can’t ignore the responsibilities you have for kids. You might also have to pick up the tab for a social occasion.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Relations with members of the general public as well as spouses, partners and close friends are warm and friendly. You will feel stimulated by the company of others. Nevertheless, responsibilities with a parent or someone at home cannot be ignored.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Work-related travel is likely. Others will be happy to form partnerships and groups in order to get the most done. Teamwork is the key. Don’t fall into worry mode. “Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but gets you nowhere.”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a marvellous day to shmooz with others. Enjoy social outings, sporting events, the arts, musical performances, the theatre and playful activities with kids. Admittedly, financial restrictions might clip your wings or make you rethink some plans. It was ever thus. You play — you pay.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a wonderful day to entertain at home. In fact, group gatherings for any reason will be a positive experience for you. You might also check out real-estate opportunities. Nevertheless, you can’t ignore obligations you face you right now. That’s the name of the game.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Singer, songwriter Rod Stewart (1945) shares your birthday. You’re self-confident, charming, optimistic and always original. You inspire respect from others. This year is slower-paced. It’s OK to rest. Take time to rejuvenate your energies and focus on those who are kind and helpful to you. It’s OK to get help from others.

The first things staff and visitors see after ascending to the third floor of Qualico’s head office in Winnipeg are two statues — one each for company founders David and Katherine Friesen.

Flanking the doors to the integrated real estate company’s C-suite offices, the bronze sculptures are monuments to the couple and the vision, strength and integrity (as the plaques attached to the wooden pedestals attest) it took to start Qualico in 1951.

But imagine for a moment what it would be like if the sculptures were less reverent and more whimsical. Picture them outfitted with the kind of pull-string voice boxes one finds in a child’s toy. What might they say?

It’s possible one of David Friesen’s phrases would be: “No margin, no mission.”

An eroding Winnipeg neighbourhood looks to new foundations

Ian Bickis, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:45 AM CDT

The lot Jesse Bettcher lives on in Winnipeg's North End used to be a pile of burnt rubble. Same with the one next door. And the one across the street. But he's now the proud owner of a two-storey house with blue-grey siding and white trim.

Landlord asks city to work with him over homeless camp after appeal option turfed

Scott Billeck 4 minute read Yesterday at 5:44 PM CDT

A West Broadway landlord says the City of Winnipeg has rejected his attempt to appeal an order that requires him to clear a homeless encampment from his riverfront property.

Marvin Sharp, CEO of Astroid Management Ltd., which operates the Pen-Eve Apartments at 35 Balmoral St., said Monday the decision is absurd since his firm was given almost no time to respond to the order.

The city denied his request for an appeal hearing because he failed to respond before the July 18 compliance deadline.

Sharp contends that was impossible because the compliance order, dated July 10, did not arrive at his office until July 17, leaving him just one day to file an appeal. The city clerk’s office is closed on weekends.

Manage failure or align responses

Marion Willis 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Every few weeks, Winnipeg repeats the same ritual.

An encampment is dismantled. People gather what little they own and move somewhere else. Outreach workers start over. Police respond to the next location. Emergency departments see the same people. Neighbours grow more frustrated. Businesses absorb another loss.

Then the cycle begins again.

We’ve mistaken movement for progress.
