TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is an enjoyable time for you and your home situation is happy. In fact, you’ll enjoy entertaining. Give yourself a chance to learn new things, because this will please you, especially because you’re ready to work hard to boost your earnings.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Fiery Mars enters your sign to stay until mid-August. (This happens once every two years.) Mars will boost your confidence and energy and make you work harder. You’ll want personal freedom and you won’t hesitate to defend yourself.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Alphabetize your blessings because you have the sun, Mercury and lucky Jupiter all in your sign, with Jupiter giving you divine protection. This happens only once every 12 years. Reach out and help someone.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Although it is an excellent week to buy wardrobe items for yourself — don’t do it just now. There’s a moon alert all day. Nevertheless, it’s a wonderful day to shmooz, enjoy creative projects and make art. Sports and fun activities with kids will appeal.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a wonderful day to shmooz because it’s a moon alert. It’s not a good day for serious discussions or decisions. However, it’s a great time to be open to others and to listen what they have to say — and enjoy good company.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You feel a strong need to share your ideas. You’ll have no trouble doing so because you look attractive to everyone because the sun and Jupiter are at the top of your chart. If you want to make travel plans, wait until tomorrow to act, because there’s a moon alert in effect all day.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Be careful because you might be having money discussions. You will also be tempted to shop. Be aware there is a moon alert all day, which means you will be wise to restrict spending to food and gas. Disputes about shared property might arise.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

The moon is in your sign giving you an advantage over all the other signs. However, there is a moon alert in effect all day. Enjoy shmoozing and exploring creative hobbies. Sports and fun activities with kids will be great choices.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You’ll enjoy playing things low-key because your privacy appeals. Nevertheless, you can accomplish a lot if you want to work. Whatever happens, be aware there is a moon alert in effect all day. Avoid important decisions. Restrict spending to food and gas.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Friendships are important to you; however, this day in particular, you will really value a friend or perhaps talking to a group. You might be involved in physical sports or competitive activities. Be aware there is a moon alert all day. Restrict spending the food and gas. Enjoy your day.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

People notice you. In fact, some people will know personal details about your private life. Whatever the case, be aware the moon alert urges you to restrict your spending to food and gas. Postpone important decisions. Enjoy shmoozing and exploring the arts.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, comedian, filmmaker, songwriter, playwright Mel Brooks (1926) shares your birthday. You are people-oriented; however, one minute you’re extroverted, optimistic and empathetic, and the next, you’re withdrawn and introverted. This year you will reap the benefits of all your hard work. Expect a promotion, kudos, awards and the limelight. Seize opportunities and act on them. The spotlight will find you.

Man accused of breaking into Kingsway homes, high school

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:50 PM CDT

A 35-year-old man has been accused of breaking into six Crescentwood homes and a nearby high school on Saturday morning, causing damage estimated at $25,000.

At about 6:30 a.m. July 25, Winnipeg police got several 911 calls about an unknown man breaking into homes in the 100 block of Kingsway after throwing bricks and rocks through windows and glass doors. In some cases, a man confronted and threatened residents and stole their belongings, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.

One of the victims flagged down officers when police arrived on scene, pointing out a man walking down the street armed with a broken liquor bottle. The suspect dropped the bottle and police arrested him.

No one was injured and the Major Crimes Unit took on the investigation.

Trailblazer Kati Tabin brings PWHL championship trophy home to share success, inspire next generation

Starstruck kids and fans zigzagged throughout the rink, anxiously waiting to get an autograph from Kati Tabin and to see their role model on the same side of the glass.

Tabin, Montreal Victoire defender and Team Canada silver medallist, on Saturday came home to the rink where it all began, the Oakbank Community Club. She brought the PWHL championship trophy, the Walter Cup, won in her third season with the club, as well as her 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic medal.

The arena was packed to the brim with fans from all over coming to see Tabin — the local player who made history in women’s hockey. Hundreds of enthusiasts of all ages lined up with their Victoire or Team Canada merchandise, some waiting over two hours to see their idol.

Eight-year-old Loxley Cierzan came with her mother, Ainsley, and other family members to meet the one and only Tabin. Cierzan has loved seeing other girls grace the ice and play the competitive sport she adores. When the PWHL takeover stopped in Winnipeg in March, she not only got to watch the game but also a practice beforehand where Tabin signed her Victoire hat.

Man, 20, faces charges in street-racing incident

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:37 PM CDT

Speeding drivers were racing through Elmwood at up to 200 km/h overnight, Winnipeg police say.

Around 2 a.m. July 26, police got reports of a Corvette and other vehicles racing along Disraeli Freeway. Using the Winnipeg Police Service's helicopter, officers monitored the vehicles and recorded speeds, including vehicles crossing the Nairn overpass at up to 200 km/hr.

Officers with the central traffic unit tried to pull over a Jeep and a Corvette at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Regent Avenue. The driver of the Corvette didn't stop and sped past police, eventually stopping in the 100 block of Johnson Avenue where the driver and passenger got out and ran.

The K9 unit tracked the suspects to the 100 block of Poplar Avenue. One of them was taken down by a police dog and received medical attention. Both were taken into custody.

Qualico celebrating 75 years of growth, success since its first development of 13 bungalows in River Heights

The first things staff and visitors see after ascending to the third floor of Qualico’s head office in Winnipeg are two statues — one each for company founders David and Katherine Friesen.

Flanking the doors to the integrated real estate company’s C-suite offices, the bronze sculptures are monuments to the couple and the vision, strength and integrity (as the plaques attached to the wooden pedestals attest) it took to start Qualico in 1951.

But imagine for a moment what it would be like if the sculptures were less reverent and more whimsical. Picture them outfitted with the kind of pull-string voice boxes one finds in a child’s toy. What might they say?

It’s possible one of David Friesen’s phrases would be: “No margin, no mission.”

Together Project helps newcomers feel at home

AV Kitching 10 minute read 6:00 AM CDT

When refugee families first arrive in Winnipeg they are plunged into an alien culture.

Often fleeing dangerous circumstances, discrimination or war, displaced families are forced to navigate bewildering societal norms and cultural expectations in an unfamiliar environment.

It can often feel utterly overwhelming.

And while government settlement agencies are an invaluable foundational resource, nothing can replace human connection and peer-to-peer guidance.
