MOON ALERT: Caution. Avoid shopping (except for food and gas) and important decisions until 2 a.m. The moon is in Cancer.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

It’s the beginning of the week, and you’re up for fun socializing. The arts, the entertainment world and the hospitality industry are highlighted. Increased chaos and activity at home might be demanding. Even if pressed, make no commitments with a partner or close friend.

Evita star Antonio Banderas is 66 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You’re keen to express yourself to others. You’ll be convincing, which is good news for those in sales, marketing, teaching, writing and acting. Nevertheless, your primary focus now is on home and family. Exercise caution with work-related romance.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This week begins at a busy, eager pace. Short trips and conversations with daily contacts, siblings and relatives will interest you. You’re working hard to earn money and spend it. (See moon alert.) When it comes to romance, be careful. Wait until tomorrow.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You are careful with money, which is a good thing. Be aware of the restrictions of moon alert and avoid spending (except for food and gas), because you will be tempted to do so with three planets in your money house. Make no promises at home.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You hold all the cards this week because the sun, Mercury and lucky Jupiter are in your sign. Looking good. However, do not feel pressured by others into saying or doing something or committing to anything you don’t want. Be cautious. Check moon alert.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might be tempted to buy something beautiful and elegant; however, please be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert. (See above.) Despite your strong feelings, there’s an element of confusion present, perhaps regarding your financial ability to pay for something.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tricky day because in one way, it’s a gorgeous day to be friendly and sociable with everyone. There’s a moon alert, which lightens the feelings of all your social exchanges and encourages a carefree nonchalance with everything. Nevertheless, confusion and deceit are possible.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You make a great impression on everyone now with the sun, Mercury and Jupiter high in your chart. Furthermore, you’re eager to travel and expand your world through learning and talking to others. But relations (especially secret romance) might be confusing. Do nothing.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a wonderful week to travel, learn and expand your world, all things you love to do. However, a commitment to a friendship or group might create confusion for you. You might feel compelled or coerced by someone. Wait until tomorrow to decide.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

It’s easy for you to be charming and gracious right now, especially in the eyes of others. (This is important to you.) You might feel urged by someone or feel a strong sense of responsibility to do something; and yet, there is hesitation. You’re right — this is why you should wait until tomorrow for clarity.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Romance with someone “different” might be compelling. Nevertheless, don’t be seduced by someone (or even yourself) because things are not clear. Wait until tomorrow, which is a lovely romantic day. Things will flow naturally.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is an industrious week because you’re motivated to work hard, and you’ll be pleased to accomplish a lot. However, issues regarding shared property, taxes, debt and inheritances are fuzzy. Knowing this, do not act and don’t agree to anything important. Furthermore, restrict your spending to food and gas during the moon alert. (See above.)

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Champion curler Meleschuk never lost his passion for the game

Joshua Frey-Sam 9 minute read Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026

At the height of his curling career, Orest Meleschuk balanced ferocity and finesse like almost no one else.

The Winnipeg product was a fierce competitor skilful enough to thread a rock through a window and find the button.

Known as “The Big O,” he curled competitively for over six decades, finding success at the local, provincial, national and global level, and his longevity on the pebble was notable before lengthy careers became the norm.

Meleschuk is still tied with his good friend John Usackis for the most appearances in the Manitoba men’s provincial playdowns, at 30.

Luxury and livability

Todd Lewys 5 minute read Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026

Those in the market for a new luxury home tend to be looking for two things.

First, the home must be unique — which is to say it possesses defining design characteristics that set it apart from other homes. Second, while the home must be different, it also must be livable.

Problem is, many home builders get too focused on fashion, which often makes for a visually arresting home that, sadly, isn’t as functional as it could be.

Fortunately, that’s not the case in Maric Homes’ stunning bungalow show home at 2 Woodland Lane in Headingley’s Forest Grove Estates.

Main Street restaurant Boujee burns for the second time in one week

Aaron Epp 2 minute read Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026

A former restaurant on Main Street is set to be demolished after a fire broke out for the second time in less than a week.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to reports of a fire at Boujee Restaurant and Bar, a vacant, single-storey building on the 100 block of Main Street shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday. The same building was most recently damaged in a fire last Sunday.

At the scene, crews found heavy smoke coming from the building. After attacking the fire using aerial ladders that sprayed water from above, firefighters arranged an emergency demolition of the building. Demolition is expected to be completed today, the WFPS said in a news release.

No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation.

First Nations need co-ordinated health care

Dr. Rafiq Andani 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

In November 2025, Garden Hill Anisininew Nation declared a state of emergency. The threat was not wildfire or flood. The reason was hepatitis A, a vaccine-preventable liver infection spread through contaminated water, food and close contact.

As of July 16, 2026, Manitoba had recorded 898 cases of hepatitis A across the province since September 2024, including 197 hospitalizations and seven deaths.

Manitoba Health says most cases spread from person to person, while inadequate sewage and water infrastructure in remote communities has contributed to ongoing transmission.

The outbreak has spread across all four Anisininew Nations of the Island Lake region — Garden Hill, St. Theresa Point, Wasagamack and Red Sucker Lake.

City puts Osborne Village lot up for sale third time

Joyanne Pursaga 5 minute read Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026

The city is making a third attempt to sell a seemingly prime Osborne Street property, after an offer for the surface parking lot fell through earlier this year.

The 772-square-metre space at 145 Osborne St., which formerly operated as an official paid city parking lot, has been posted for sale once again.

It may puzzle some Winnipeggers to see the site in the heart of Osborne Village remain empty so long after the city declared it surplus in 2020.

However, a few different challenges may limit its appeal to potential buyers, alocal real estate agent said.

Good debt or bad?Re: Hydro debt is good debt (Letters, Aug. 6)

I think Vince Warden’s characterization of all of Manitoba Hydro’s debt as “good debt” may be questionable.

For example, the building of Bipole III on the western side of the province instead of the more direct route along the east side of Lake Winnipeg was felt by many to be a decision based on politics rather than economics. The eastern route would have been shorter, less costly to build, less costly to maintain and would have resulted in less line loss.

I don’t want to reopen the debate, I just want to make the point that if the contribution of a capital asset, purchased using debt, could have been acquired at a lower cost, the additional debt is not “good debt”.
