ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a fantastic day to travel and do anything to expand your world. Sporting events, kids’ activities, the theatre or the arts will be exciting choices. You’ll also feel sympathetic to people in other nations. You might even act on this feeling in a practical way.

Night at the Museum star Steve Coogan turns 61 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You are the financial wizard of the zodiac and this is an excellent day for financial negotiations and discussions about shared property, mortgages, taxes, debt and inheritances. You’ll be sympathetic but practical. You might improve things with home and family.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You might attract someone very interesting to you — this person might be logical, informed and sensitive. They might have bright ideas they express very directly. In turn, you’ll feel revved up by these conversations and perhaps will come forth with your own clever suggestions.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You might be in a position to help someone or put the needs and wants of another before your own. You might be financially generous or see ways to encourage others to be helpful. Whatever you do will likely earn the respect of others. (Hey, good press is always nice.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a high-energy, playful day. Enjoy shmoozing with friends. Sporting events, fun activities with kids, the entertainment world and spending time with others will be great choices. Do something that pleases you. Romance with someone of an age difference might happen.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might make some home improvements or pay bills and secure your dwelling in a better way. Instead of domestic upgrades, this could translate into helping a family member, as well. Stock the fridge as your home routine might change.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You will negotiate strongly on your own behalf, or for anything you want to do. You might represent a group or friend. Not only will you be persuasive and charming, you’ll also be practical and sensible. Whatever you do, you will do with a keen balance.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Financial discussions will go well. You might see ways to boost your income. At work, you will persevere and you won’t overlook details because your mind is focused and ready to create order out of chaos. People will listen to you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re in the driver’s seat because the moon is in your sign dancing beautifully with Mars, Saturn and Neptune. You know what you want to achieve and you will do so even if you are interrupted by someone unusual and unexpected.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might use the resources of someone else, perhaps a partner, to help someone in need. This person in need might be a family member, or they could be someone far way in a distant land. Lately, you are involved with creative, younger people, perhaps from your past.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You might attract someone a bit aggressive to you. However, this person might help you deal with friends and groups to get things done, especially if you want to help someone in need. (This isn’t surprising because you strive to make the world a better place.)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You’re high-viz, which means people notice you. They see you as sympathetic, strong and proactive, which is a good thing. This puts you in a position where you can convince others to listen to your ideas and perhaps jump on your bandwagon and fight for a worthy cause.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Steve Coogan (1965) shares your birthday. You’re adventurous, imaginative and curious. You’re also independent-minded and a keen traveller. White-supremacist highway sign casts pall on Steinbach city council campaign

Matthew Frank 4 minute read Yesterday at 7:41 PM CDT

The RCMP is investigating a white-nationalist sign near Steinbach with racist messaging and alleged links to a known Canadian far-right group.

A sign hanging on a overpass at the intersection of Highways 1 and 12 read: “STEINBACH VOTES WHITE NOT BROWN,” according to photos posted on social media.

Also written was the name Nationalist-13, a men’s-only neo-Nazi group, also known as NS-13, primarily based in Hamilton, Ont. The Free Press couldn’t independently verify if the group is associated or who hung the sign.

“On Oct. 13, the Steinbach RCMP were made aware of this sign and have opened an investigation,” a spokesperson said in an email statement. They also said the sign has been removed.

Gang member who shot rival, bystander back in prison after release revoked

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Monday, Oct. 12, 2026

A Winnipeg man who shot a rival teenage gangster and an innocent 11-year-old bystander at the crowded Red River Exhibition more than four years ago has been sent back to prison.

Mocree Chuck Scatch-Dubour, now in his early 20s, left prison in April on statutory release on his 5 1/2-year federal sentence for the 2022 shooting. Scatch-Dubour was sentenced to the prison term as an adult in the spring of 2023 after pleading guilty to discharge of a firearm with intent to wound, aggravated assault and possession of a restricted firearm.

By law, most federal inmates automatically receive statutory release after two-thirds of their sentence, if they have not already been paroled.

Parole Board of Canada officials formally revoked Scatch-Dubour’s release this month after he unlawfully left his halfway house in June.

‘People count on this place’: Pembina Hwy. Giant Tiger latest location slated to close

By Matthew Frank 3 minute read Monday, Oct. 12, 2026

Another Giant Tiger store in Winnipeg will shutter next year, leaving some area residents concerned about a lack of affordable groceries in the neighbourhood.

Red papers taped to the front doors of the Canadian retail chain’s location at Pembina Highway and Southpark Drive indicate it will close Feb. 27.

Doreen Yanchuk, a self-described bargain hunter, shook her head when she saw the signs Monday. The 67-year-old said she’s a regular customer at the location because it’s a five-minute drive from her home.

“They have very good sales here, which draws people to the shop because everything is expensive,” Yanchuk said.

Tenants battling landlords find help in short supply from province

Scott Billeck 14 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

For nearly three years, Quincy Houdayer and Avery Helm repeatedly pressed their landlord to address plumbing failures, water damage and other maintenance problems at their West Broadway apartment, with records showing some issues persisted until the couple turned to the Residential Tenancies Branch.

Emails and text messages between the tenants, Clearwater Management and the RTB reviewed by the Free Press document recurring leaks and flooding, periods without heat or hot water, concerns about mould and basement conditions and repeated followups from the couple seeking repairs.

“Most of the experiences we’ve had with them can be boiled down to, like, they either are very dismissive about it, they act like it’s not their problem… or they will just fully, blatantly ignore you,” Helm said, adding that the only way to get Clearwater to respond was to threaten going to the RTB, a provincial government agency.

RTB data obtained by the Free Press also shows 13 orders involving the three-building complex at 193-197 Furby St. in 2026 alone. All but one favoured the tenant, while the remaining order ruled in favour of both the tenant and landlord on different items.
