MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Capricorn.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Your most intimate and personal life might be on public display more than usual. Some people might know details about your private life. Be aware of this. Also be aware of blurring the distinction between professional and personal relationships. (You know who you are.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You might feel a strong urge to “get away from all this.” Travel would be a great option, but even being a tourist in your own city will please you. You’ll feel excited to learn something new and interact with people from different backgrounds.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Although this is a relatively laid-back day, your emotional experiences might be more intense than usual. This means conflicts with others might be emotional. Therefore, guard against knee-jerk reactions, especially with females.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Something will turn your attention to your most personal relationships (interactions with spouses, partners and close friends). These people seem more important to you, which is why you might even feel jealous if they pay attention to someone else.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You might have to put your own needs and wants second to those of another person. Perhaps someone requires your help, assistance or support in some way? Being a generous person, you will likely help if you can, and feel good about it.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Romance is more important to you right now. If you’re involved with someone, you might feel protective toward them. You might also feel this way towards children. You might feel a crush on someone — someone famous or someone you’ve never met in person. (We all have our heroes and heroines.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is the perfect day to enjoy the privacy of your own home and relax among familiar surroundings. Take it easy. Take a moment to look at your own attitudes and feelings. You might also be more aware of your habits and how much they control your world. Ain’t it the truth?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Your communications with someone are important to you. You want to be heard. You want to have the freedom to speak to somebody at a gut level. This is why you won’t be satisfied with superficial chit-chat. Hopefully, you will find someone who listens and understands.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

For whatever reason, it’s easy to identify with your possessions and feel a stronger attachment to them. This might be why you don’t want to lend something to someone. You might also have to defend yourself in areas where you really have nothing at stake.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The moon is in your sign which can make you more emotional than usual, but it can also bring you a bit of extra good luck, which gives you an advantage over all other signs. That means this is the day to ask the universe for a favour! Try it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Solitude in pleasant surroundings will appeal to you because you feel the need to contemplate your navel and ponder profound questions. You might not feel like socializing, which is entirely fine. Do your own thing.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your emotional contact with friends is important to you. This is why you might feel protective and more supportive of someone you know. This is also an excellent day to examine your overall goals to see if they will take you where you want to go.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Musician Eminem (1972) shares your birthday. You’re adventurous, philosophical and thoughtful. You have the conviction of your ideas and like to influence others. This is the beginning of a new nine-year cycle. Expect adventures and major changes. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities and be ready to act. Define your goals. Prepare for leadership.

Empty desks: Advocates talk chronic school absenteeism

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Updated: 3:16 PM CDT

Concerned that school and government leaders are downplaying the state of student absenteeism, community organizers are strategizing to create urgency around who’s regularly missing class — and why — in Winnipeg.

The inaugural Youth at Risk in Winnipeg Symposium, held over the weekend at the Canadian Mennonite University, drew roughly 100 people to discuss barriers to attendance and brainstorm ways to remove them.

Nearly 20 years after he began calling attention to the issue, first as a volunteer with the Point Douglas Residents Committee, Sel Burrows gave an impassioned speech about the lack of political will to take meaningful action to help students from “dysfunctional homes.”

“I’ve dealt with nine cabinet ministers, Conservative and NDP, and five deputy ministers, and the issue has not gotten any better,” Burrows told teachers, reseachers and community support workers gathered Saturday on CMU’s Shaftesbury campus.

Klein says union’s attack ads are ‘dirty politics’

Free Press staff 2 minute read 1:16 PM CDT

Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein said attack ads from Winnipeg’s largest union are an example of “dirty politics” and verge on United States-style campaigning.

The pamphlets, signed by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500, show a United States flag draped behind Klein, with text stating he has sided with “the broader alt-right political movement” and defends the U.S.

“As Canadians we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. This is not the politics that we have experienced in the City of Winnipeg. This is not the type of politics we want to experience in Canada,” he said during a Tuesday news conference at his campaign headquarters.

He called on incumbent candidate Scott Gillingham to denounce the ads and reject the union’s campaign support.
