MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Aries.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

You have a lot of energy to make things happen and you’re quite serious about what you intend to achieve. You might make a to-do list. Get some physical exercise. Enjoy competitive sports. Fun activities with kids as well as arts and crafts will appeal. It’s a productive day!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Someone might quietly help you reorganize things at home. With Mercury now retrograde opposite your sign, many of you are encountering ex-partners and old friends in-person, online or in your thoughts and your dreams.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’ll enjoy shmoozing with friends, clubs and organizations. (Someone older or more experienced might be in the picture.) In turn, you’ll express yourself with forthright enthusiasm! Get ready for goofy mistakes and delays related to your job and health for the next few weeks while your ruler Mercury is retrograde. (Gulp.)

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Discussions with parents, bosses, VIPs and the police will be serious and to-the-point. They might include references to your property, possessions, money and assets. Meanwhile, Mercury retrograde (which has just begun) will attract old flames back into your world.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You might be interested in the letter of the law or rules and regulations that apply in certain situations; nevertheless, you’re full of energy! Explore competitive sports and outdoor activities to blow off any pent-up steam that might be building within you. Stock the fridge. Company’s coming.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

For the next few weeks, your ruler Mercury will be retrograde creating travel issues as well as mixed-up communications, delays, confused appointments and a general sense of inefficiency and consternation. Cope as best you can.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Because of Mercury retrograde, you can expect cheques in the mail to be late, along with other delays. Financial confusion might also be in the picture so be smart and double-check your work. Read your bills and invoices carefully. Don’t be casual about spending money.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Mercury is now retrograde in your sign until Nov. 13. (If shopping for cars, trucks, bikes, cellphones or computers — big-ticket items — wait until the end of November to buy them.) Confused communications, misplaced items and delays will be classic.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re eager to travel and seek some adventure. This is also a wonderful day to enjoy the company of others and do something different. You might spend time with someone of an age difference — could be a romantic attraction? (Many of you are dabbling in hidden love affairs right now.)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You are aware of your responsibilities at home regarding parents and other duties and obligations. Possibly, someone younger or creative will help you or be a fun diversion? Welcome the finances and practical assistance of someone. “Thanks!”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Don’t give in to paralysis of negative thinking and worry, which might be tempting. Instead, welcome the help of a partner, spouse or close friend to get things done. You might hear from a boss or parent you haven’t seen for a while because of the influence of Mercury retrograde.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You’ve got a lot of energy to work and go after what you want, although you might be cautious about spending money. Grab any opportunity to learn something new as this will please you. Romance with someone different or from another culture will blossom for some of you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Kevin Kline (1947) shares your birthday. You’re innovative, imaginative and organized. You’re an adventurous perfectionist. This year you will reap the rewards of your past efforts. You might attain power and leadership. It will be a busy year. Seize opportunities and act on them. Expect promotions, kudos, awards and acknowledgement.

Hutterite colonies embrace the manufacturing business – while staying faithful to their way of life

Tucked away at Oak Bluff Hutterite Colony, past rows of communal housing and farm buildings, Aaron Maendel tinkers in a laboratory.

Black-and-white sheets smeared with grey-test formulas cover a counter. A Thermotron — a refrigerator-looking machine — is powered off but standing by to simulate any desired temperature.

Maendel moves to a worktop littered with partly full mixing cups. He pulls out a small, rectangular sample — a sheet showing the drying time of his new fixation, floor coatings.

“Very simple, actually. Very simple machine. Drags a stick through the mud,” Maendel says.

MPI must evolve to ‘best-in-class’

Kyle Ross 5 minute read 2:02 AM CDT

As a Manitoban, you pay the lowest auto insurance rates in Canada in 2026. (That’s the analysis shared in the Saskatchewan Auto Fund’s 2026 Rate Proposal, in case having your good fortune envied by your neighbours sweetens the news.)

You deal directly with one insurance company — your own — after your vehicle gets hit, rather than chasing the other driver’s company. When it comes to fair and transparent customer service, your insurer has a higher bar to jump than in many other provinces. A private insurance company could just hike your rates; before making rate changes, Manitoba Public Insurance must go through an open and transparent public hearing at the Public Utilities Board, a neutral third party.

It’s worth remembering these points as MPI is slammed in opinion columns, social media posts and water-cooler talk. We have rates and an ease of navigating claims that other Canadians envy. We have a crown corporation that is a crown jewel — or could be.

But the criticism is warranted.

A little background info

Re: Bring Power Smart home (Think Tank, Oct. 21)

Steven Fletcher’s op-ed column overlooks important history behind Efficiency Manitoba and the need to reconsider its targets.

In December 2003, Gary Doer’s NDP government announced plans for a separate agency to co-ordinate energy efficiency, water conservation and waste reduction. Provisionally named Efficiency Manitoba in 2004, the initiative became Green Manitoba, a special operating agency launched in April 2006.

First Crumbl cookie shop opens in Winnipeg

Gabrielle Piché 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 12:50 PM CDT

The early birds got their cookies.

Klaudia and Jayson Ballantyne were the first in line for the grand opening of Winnipeg’s first Crumbl location at 1570 Regent Ave. West, arriving at 2 a.m. Friday — six hours before the cookie chain was set to open.

The brother and sister brought their lawn chairs and blankets and hunkered down.

Roughly 90 minutes later, by their count, the next customers arrived.

Persistent ex much more than just a pest

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I came home alone in my own car after a first date with a great new guy I met through my work. Unfortunately, I found my ex-boyfriend in the driveway of my new rental house. He’d fallen asleep in his car, waiting there.

I just lost it! I banged on his window, and yelled, “What are you doing here? Get out of here, and go home!”

He finally sat up, rubbed his eyes and two minutes later he backed out, yelling crude names at me out the window. Then he took off like a shot!

I found out today that somebody we both know told him I was out on a date. That’s why he was drunk and jealous! I want to get rid of him for good, but now he’s not taking my calls, so I can’t even tell him that and re-ditch him!

Get out and exercise your franchise

Editorial 4 minute read 2:02 AM CDT

Are there any compelling arguments left that will convince Manitobans to vote in this province’s municipal elections on Wednesday, Oct. 28?

For years — nay, decades — this newspaper has urged people to exercise their right to vote. Our arguments have grown increasingly adamant, yet voter turnout has continued to decline.

This has created a meaningful threat to democracy itself.

Without engagement from voters, we leave ourselves open to being led by those who are, at best, ill-suited, or at worse, are emboldened to grab the levers of government power and then abuse democratic institutions.
