MOON ALERT Avoid shopping or making important decisions from 7:30 a.m. until 5:45 p.m. After that the moon moves from Capricorn in to Aquarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a goofy day. (See moon alert.) Nevertheless, the sun is in your sign and you are empowered. This only happens once a year for four weeks. Use this time to re-energize yourself for the rest of the year and be glad of the people and auspicious circumstances you attract.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is the perfect day to see museums, art galleries and appreciate the arts and crafts of other countries. You’ll love to have heady discussions about profound subjects with others. Let your day unfold but avoid major purchases or important decisions.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Even though you are focused on red-tape details, especially about shared property, banking, inheritances and insurance matters, do not make important decisions regarding these matters. Just do your databank. Get info.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a good day to shmooze with others and talk to old friends and partners. Just kick ideas around because everyone will be creative and thinking out-of-the-box. Nevertheless, agree to nothing important until after the moon alert.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Even though your focus is on work and trying to get things done, don’t expect too much from yourself or others. We have moon alert for most of the day, which means people feel indecisive and a bit restless, but it’s strong for creative activity.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a wonderful day for those who work in the arts or anyone involved in a creative project because your mind is sort of free-floating. You will think out-of-the-box and see things from a new perspective. You might come up with genius-like ideas or they could be just dumb.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

If you can cocoon at home, you will enjoy it. Family discussions might take place, especially with a female family relative. If so, agree to nothing important and don’t volunteer for anything. There is a moon alert for most of the day, so just take it easy.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a curious day because in one way you will be mentally and intellectually creative — full of brilliance — but in another way, you might be one sandwich short of a picnic. This influence can go both ways. Therefore, don’t sign anything important or agree to anything important; just write down your ideas.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your focus is on finances and cash flow. Lucky Sagittarians are reading this column right now. Do not make important financial decisions. Check with the moon alert above before you do anything, including shopping. Be safe.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The moon is in your sign; however, it is a moon alert for most of the day. This makes you feel disoriented and indecisive, but only if you try to be analytical and competent. If you just go with the flow and play hooky, you will have a lovely day.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Trust your intuition because there is a chance that it is working 80 per cent of the time. (Nevertheless, there is always that 20 per cent — don’t forget.) You might get strong impressions about things and that’s just fine. Recall them tomorrow when it is safe to act. Think today; act tomorrow.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a great day to shmooze with others, especially female acquaintances. You will love kicking around ideas about big plans for the future. Some discussions might explore humanitarian causes. But wait until tomorrow to act. (See moon alert.)

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Singer/composer Elton John (1947) shares your birthday. Your energy is so powerful and limitless you are almost unstoppable. You are capable and you know what you can and cannot do. Although tactful, you are frank when need be. You are also loyal. This is your most powerful year because you can gain wealth. It’s a good year to liquidate or sell property and make money in general. Think big!

Tavern United closes downtown location

Zoe Pierce 2 minute read Friday, Jul. 3, 2026

For the crowd leaving a Winnipeg Jets or Sea Bears game, big name concert or just a night out downtown, Tavern United was often a familiar stop across from Canada Life Centre.

That longtime routine has now ended with the sports bar’s permanent closure. A notice posted on the door of the Tavern United chain location thanks its now former customers.

“We are grateful for your loyalty, support and memories shared over the years. We hope to welcome you nearby at Resto 12 or at any of our other Tavern United locations across Winnipeg,” the sign reads.

No reason for the closure was listed.

Berkshire Hathaway, Manitoba-style

Joel Schlesinger 6 minute read Saturday, Jul. 4, 2026

Omaha, Neb., has its “Oracle,” but Manitoba has its market miracle.

The legendary Warren Buffett transformed Berkshire Hathaway Inc. from a textile company into a wildly successful conglomerate that acquires great companies and generally takes a hands-off approach, letting them do what they do best.

And it’s been a very profitable strategy.

Manitoba’s market miracle is Exchange Income Corp. (TSX: EIF). A publicly traded conglomerate on the Toronto Stock Exchange, it has a similar strategy.

‘Senseless violence’: Man gets seven years for stabbing wife’s aunt to death

Erik Pindera 3 minute read 1:44 PM CDT

A Winnipeg man who fatally stabbed his wife’s aunt in the neck after she tried to calm a drug and alcohol-fuelled argument over $20 has been sent to prison for seven years.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Jeffrey Harris gave Dustin Swampy, 31, the sentence late last month for manslaughter in the May 2024 stabbing death of Rachel Muswagon, 37.

He had stood trial for second-degree murder but was instead convicted of the lesser offence.

“Mr. Swampy armed himself with a knife during a domestic dispute over $20 and used that knife against a defenceless victim who posed no risk of harm to Mr. Swampy,” wrote Harris in his sentencing decision.

Brandon declares local state of emergency

4 minute read Saturday, Jul. 4, 2026

BRANDON -- The City of Brandon has declared a state of local emergency as officials prepare for forecasted flooding along the Assiniboine and Shellmouth river basins and continued increases in river levels.

The council voted unanimously during a special meeting Saturday evening to support the recommendation of the city’s Emergency Manager, Tobin Praznik, and Director of Engineering, Kyle Winters, following updated provincial flood forecasts showing continued increases in expected river levels.

The city's mayor, Jeff Fawcett, said the move is a proactive measure to protect residents, critical infrastructure and property.

“The declaration should not alarm residents … it is intended to ensure the city is prepared well before the river reaches its expected peak around July 12,” he told the Sun.

Southwestern Manitoba hammered by hail, thousands without power amid more wild weather

Scott Billeck 5 minute read Updated: 5:12 PM CDT

It looked more like the middle of February than early July in parts of southwestern Manitoba, with streets, rooftops and yards blanketed in white on Sunday.

The white covering Killarney wasn’t snow, however — it was hail, left behind by a powerful storm that pummelled the community located about 250 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

“It looks like a war zone at the moment,” Killarney resident Céline Dagg said on Monday.

Residents reported the hailstorm began around 5:45 p.m. and lasted about 10-15 minutes, leaving widespread damage in its wake.
