Man in custody after attempted carjacking

A man is facing robbery charges after assaulting a man while trying to steal his vehicle Monday evening.

Just before 6 p.m. police were driving southbound on Salter Street at Selkirk Avenue when they saw a carjacking in progress. They observed a man assaulting the victim, a man in his 70s, and attempting to pull him out of the vehicle.

The suspect fled and officers chased after him on foot, eventually catching him on the 400 block of Flora Avenue. Officers used a Taser on the man during the arrest.

Officers later learned the victim was driving northbound on Salter when the suspect jumped in front of his vehicle, forcing him to stop. The suspect assaulted the victim through the open driver window and attempted to pull him out of the vehicle. The victim suffered minor injuries but did not require further medical attention.

You’ve got a serious problem here. We’re not talking about someone throwing garbage on the ground. We’re talking about encampments.”

Sharp said he received a city compliance order on July 10 order, which was viewed by the Free Press. It says a bylaw officer observed “an accumulation of garbage” on the property, including abandoned goods of manufacture, tents and unattended shopping carts.

Harvey Tschetter didn’t know someone was under his SUV when he was roused by the sounds of a power saw cutting metal and took a look around the vehicle outside his North Kildonan condo.

After finding nothing untoward and going back inside, he heard repeated hammer strikes and saw a vehicle idling next to his Mitsubishi RVR, which he’d purchased two days earlier. Someone was trying to steal the SUV’s catalytic converter.

“I ran out there and I screamed at them, ‘What the F do you think you’re doing?’ They crawled out from under my car, held the hammer up like, don’t come near me, and drove off,” Tschetter said of the June 8 incident. “It was 5 a.m. and completely light out. I can’t believe how brazen they were. They showed no fear.”

The incident happened amid a sharp year-over-year increase in reports of catalytic converter thefts or attempted thefts to Manitoba Public Insurance, after record highs in 2021 and 2022 led to increased enforcement, provincial anti-theft legislation and a period of significant decline.
