Winnipeg pair wins first senior international ahead of Skate Canada debut

Laurie Nealin 5 minute read 5:35 PM CDT

For athletes heading into a milestone competition, nothing delivers a jolt of confidence quite like recording a first international win and personal-best scores mere weeks before the big event.

That scenario played out for figure skaters Ava Kemp and Yohnatan Elizarov over the Thanksgiving weekend at the Tayside Trophy in Dundee, Scotland, where they dominated the nine-pair field from start to finish. The Winnipeg duo tallied career-best short program, long program and total scores.

“There were some teams there that had been to the Olympics, so it was cool beating them,” Elizarov said.

As the 2026 world junior champions counted down the days before their debut in senior Grand Prix competition at Skate Canada International next week (Oct. 30-Nov. 1), Elizarov explained how many more points they could score in Kelowna, B.C., by avoiding deductions incurred in Dundee.

Thompson terminal ‘will help unlock’ North

Aaron Epp 5 minute read 8:07 PM CDT

After decades of planning and years of construction, Thompson Regional Airport has opened its new terminal building.

At 40,000-square-feet, the structure is almost three times larger than the facility it replaced. The project cost approximately $125 million, which included the terminal building, a new parking lot, apron and water treatment facility.

Airport staff began operating out of the terminal on Oct. 4.

“It’s a special moment for us all to be in this space,” said James Lindsey, president and CEO of the Thompson Regional Airport Authority. “There’s a lot of opportunity in the North and this is the right piece of infrastructure at the right time that will help unlock the North.”

Jets out of tune against Blues

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Updated: 8:29 AM CDT

ST. LOUIS – The issue is no longer limited to secondary scoring for the Winnipeg Jets.

Although they continue to be far too reliant on the top line for production, the Jets have suddenly been limited to not enough goals in a more general sense.

The latest example was a 2-1 loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center.

The Jets battled hard in this Central Division duel, but they’ve scored 24 goals in nine games (2.67 goals per game) and have one victory during the past five games after a 3-0-1 start. One of those losses did come in overtime (1-3-1).

Klein, Gillingham trade jabs over megaproject

Malak Abas 6 minute read 9:36 PM CDT

Two of Winnipeg’s mayoral candidates wasted no time trading barbs over who bears responsibility for the skyrocketing cost of overhauling the North End sewage treatment plant, during a televised debate Wednesday.

Scott Gillingham and Kevin Klein pointed the finger at each other for the rising cost of the massive project, which had a cost estimate of $795 million in 2015 and had ballooned to $3.2 billion as of the latest estimate.

“We need to be able to understand how that amount tripled in that short a time,” Klein said at the event held at CBC’s downtown Winnipeg headquarters. He pointed out the first estimate was given when Gillingham was chairman of the city’s finance committee. He questioned what the incumbent did to garner funding for the project.

Gillingham shot back by noting Klein was Manitoba’s environment minister in 2023. He accused his opponent of failing to make a dent on the cost.

Katz ‘violated public trust,’ Sheegl lacked ‘moral compass,’ police HQ inquiry commissioner concludes

Joyanne Pursaga 8 minute read Monday, Oct. 19, 2026

The final report from the public inquiry into the scandal-plagued Winnipeg Police Service headquarters construction project concludes that former mayor Sam Katz and former city CAO Phil Sheegl broke public trust and engaged in unethical conduct.

And the report, released Monday by inquiry commissioner Garth Smorang, says the cost of the project — transforming a downtown Canada Post office tower and warehouse into the police HQ — soared, in part, because main contractor Caspian Projects overcharged the city by more than $40 million in expenses.

The project’s initial $135-million initial price tag rose to about $209 million in the end. The city purchased the complex in 2009; construction was completed in 2016.

Smorang’s report concludes Katz “violated the public trust” and council code of conduct, and Sheegl suffered from a “complete lack of a moral compass.”

Gillingham says Portage and Main underground should stay open

Joyanne Pursaga 5 minute read Updated: 7:27 PM CDT

Scott Gillingham said he hopes to keep the circular concourse beneath Portage Avenue and Main Street open, if he’s re-elected mayor next week.

“I would like to find a way for it to stay,” said Gillingham during the mayoral debate hosted by CJOB Wednesday.

The downtown intersection reopened to pedestrians at street level in June 2025.

When he first supported that hotly debated reopening in 2024, Gillingham called for the underground mall to be closed. At the time, the city estimated it would take $73 million and up to five years of traffic-snarling construction to repair the leaking membrane under the street that protects the properties below.
