OUR judges faced a pretty wicked task: choose the best student essays telling the back-story of a favourite fictional character, in much the way the musical Wicked tells the back-story of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 20/08/2011 (5331 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

OUR judges faced a pretty wicked task: choose the best student essays telling the back-story of a favourite fictional character, in much the way the musical Wicked tells the back-story of the Wicked Witch of the West.

But when the dust settled, the judges had picked two winners, one in the senior category, one junior.

Samantha Samson is entering Grade 12 at Stonewall Collegiate Institute. She won in our senior category, with the story of another witch. Sam’s essay Removing the Sugar Coating is told from the point of view of the witch in Hansel and Gretel. And a widely misunderstood woman she is, too.

Mira Refvik is entering Grade 9 at Grant Park High School. Her winning essay, The True Story of the Wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, has a surprise witch in it.

Each young woman wins four tickets to the opening night of Wicked at the Centennial Concert Hall Wednesday and a prize package of Wicked merchandise.

We hope you enjoy their stories.
