WINNIPEG – Maxim Shostakovich, son of the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, has cancelled his guest-conducting appearances with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra this Friday and Saturday for health reasons.

“Maestro Shostakovich has been advised by his doctor not to undertake any international flights at this time,” the WSO said in a news release. “He is very sorry… and he hopes to be able to appear with the WSO in a future season.”

In place of the 73-year-old maestro, Dmitry Sitkovetsky will conduct the All Shostakovich program at the Centennial Concert Hall.

Sitkovetsky, who is also Russian, appeared with the WSO as a violin soloist back in 1984, but has never before conducted the orchestra.

The concerts include German guest violinist Korbinian Altenberger performing Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, as well as the orchestra performing Hamlet: Incidental Music and the composer’s Symphony No. 9.

Tickets, ranging in price from $23 to $87, are still available at Ticketmaster or the WSO box office, 949-3999.

According to organizers, the venues across Canada have been handpicked – including the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver and Foufounes Électriques in Montreal, among others — owing to their reputations as “places where fans already gather and music culture lives.”

Cholakis, who graduated from the U of M’s dentistry school in 1982, had high praise for the dental hygiene profession.
