THE Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will honour local soprano Tracy Dahl with its Golden Baton Award at its annual spring gala and awards dinner on April 23 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
Dahl will sing with the WSO at the gala, marking the first time the full orchestra has performed at the event.
The Golden Baton, given for significant contribution to the musical life of the community through excellence or support of the WSO, will go to Dahl for artistic achievement and to former board president Carol Bellringer for community leadership.
Dahl, a coloratura soprano, has had an international operatic and concert career. She has sung on prestigious stages including La Scala in Italy and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and with all of Canada’s major opera companies. She is also a voice teacher at the University of Manitoba.
Bellringer, auditor general of the province, will be honoured for her outstanding contribution to the WSO board during a period of intense financial challenges. Her leadership and dedication helped set the stage for the renewed stability of the organization.
Two WSO members who are retiring, clarinet player Richard Klassen and bassoonist James Ewen, will also be recognized.
Tickets for the Spring Gala are $195 per person or $2,300 for a corporate table at 949-3987.
