PERHAPS one of the most famous pieces of American art in existence, Norman Rockwell’s Freedom from Want painting depicts a joyous Thanksgiving dinner tableau. If you haven’t yet viewed the painting on exhibit in the Winnipeg Art Gallery show American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell, give thanks. You have one more week to see it.

The show was originally scheduled to close May 20, but due to its enormous popularity, the WAG has extended the show until May 27. For WAG’s executive director Stephen Borys, the gallery wanted to bestow freedom from want on the lovers of Rockwell’s Americana who have not yet seen the show.

“Clearly having the original works of art from the finest Rockwell collection in the world has made a big difference to our audiences, as do the many issues, events, ideas, and emotions so well documented by the artist,” Borys said. “By the time the show closes on May 27, we expect close to 30,000 people will have seen the exhibition, including thousands of school children from across the city and province.”

The Gallery will be open until 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday nights for the duration of the show, and will have extended hours (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) for the final four days of the run, from May 24 to 27.
