Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 24/12/2014 (4173 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
If you’re anything like me, your ideal New Year’s Eve involves enjoying a bottle of wine on a comfy couch and not leaving your house (dress code: maybe the nice yoga pants). Please, look for my forthcoming memoir, This Is (Almost) 30: Oh God, I Am So Tired.
But if you’re more the champagne-and-sequins type, then your ideal NYE involves hitting the town hard. Well, revellers, you’re in luck; there are a bunch of cool gigs — featuring the best and brightest from our local music scene — happening around town in Dec. 31. Heck, I might even be inspired to go out.

The Park Theatre‘s annual Retro New Year’s Eve Party — which sees a local band delve into the not-so-deep cuts of a specific decade — is already sold out this year. For Bros. on the Run, hot-shot roots-rock act the Bros. Landreth will be covering the songs of Paul McCartney, Wings and Let It Be-era Beatles in celebration of the ’70s. Maybe you’ll get lucky and one of your Facebook friends will be looking to offload a ticket or two.
Over at the Pyramid Cabaret, DJs Rick Logic, Nathan Zahn and Dave Rad will be leading the dance party of the year. Get down to dance-floor fillers from the past four decades, from James Brown to Jamiroquai. Tickets are $15 in advance at Ticketmaster, Into the Music, the Pyramid and Stella’s on Portage.
Winnipeg’s hippest new hang, the Good Will Social Club, will also be hosting a New Year’s Eve bash featuring soul-rock outfit the Noble Thiefs and indie-folk duo Sc Mira, both on local imprint Pipe & Hat. Robert Galston — — will be DJing. Doors open at 10 p.m. Tickets are $25 at the Good Will, Music Trader and Ticketfly.
Due to unforeseen circumstances there has been last-minute changes to planned shows at Winnipeg’s hippest new hang, the Good Will Social Club.
Sc Mira and and The Noble Thiefs will no longer be playing, as planned, on New Year’s Eve. You can check out the Noble Thiefs – along with the Revival and the Afterparty — at a loft party at 72 Princess St. (third floor). Admission is $20, show starts at 10:30 p.m. Sc Mira, meanwhile, will be playing at Le Garage with Cash Grab. Admission is $25, show starts at 10 p.m.
The Good Will will still be hosting a free karaoke and dance party featuring DJ Rob Galston, formerly of the blog The Rise and Sprawl. That party starts at 9 p.m.
A host of local musicians — including Ismaila Alfa, Ian Mikita, Timothy Friesen, Boots Berven, Joseph Curtis, Tyler Yip and James Hiebert — will be treating party-goers to an evening of soul at Shannon’s Irish Pub, performing nothing but classics from the likes of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Aretha Franklin and more. Tickets are $10 and available at Shannon’s.
If you want to party like it’s 1994, head to the Cavern. Winnipeg pop-rockers Sons of York will perform a set before transforming into Wyld Stallyns, their alter-ego ’90s cover band. Expect to hear your faves from (early) Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Stone Temple Pilots, Beck, Oasis, Blur, Soundgarden and more. Sons of York go on at 10 p.m.; Wyld Stallyns go on at 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.
Union Sound Hall, meanwhile, will be hosting the Union Sound Ball, featuring all five of the Exchange District venue’s DJ-owners — Co-op, Footwerk, Hunnicutt, Lambo and Lonnie Ce. Complimentary champagne, party favours and eats by Fitzroy chef/owner Jon Hochman are also on offer. Tickets are $20 at Ticketfly.com.
