For the 10th straight year the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival has set a new indoor attendance record, ending its 28th edition on Sunday with ticket sales of 108,706.
The 12-day festival saw an almost 4,000 ticket increase over the turnout in 2014, it was announced Tuesday. Daily attendance records were broken on seven of the 12 days with a new high of 237 sellouts. The 181 companies split $800,142 in box office revenue.
The kids venue also saw bigger crowds with attendance of 4,640, a 22 per cent jump from 2014. The outdoor crowd at Old Market Square was estimated at 80,000.
The Harry S. Rintoul Award for best new Manitoban play went to Sydney Hayduk and Justin Otto for their two-hander The Manic Pixie Dream Girl. The other finalists were Leigh Anne Kehler for Die, Shakespeare Die, Angie St. Mars and Joanna Burden for Mars One and Andrew Lizotte for Revenge of the Meek.
Next year’s festival will run July 13-24, 2016.
