Winnipeg Music Project monthly songwriter’s group

Local podcast the Winnipeg Music Project is partnering with the Songwriters Association of Canada to produce a monthly songwriter’s group which will allow emerging artists to receive feedback on their work from their peers, as well as a host of established songwriters and mentors. The group was developed as a way to “fulfill a need for stronger creative development opportunities for local songwriters and to begin establishing an effective and notable songwriting community in Winnipeg.” Artists scheduled to take part throughout the series include Fred Penner, Matt Schellenberg of Royal Canoe, Jenna Priestner of Mobina Galore, Jaylene Johnson and Stephen Carroll, among others. The workshops start Aug. 26 at the Forth Cafe. Registration for the full ten sessions is $120 ($100 for SAC members), and the drop-in fee for single sessions is $15 ($12 for SAC members). Locals to jam out on Woodstock tunes, man

The much-touted Woodstock 50 concert slated to take place this year might have been kiboshed, but Winnipeg music fans can make a musical pilgrimage down to Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club (234 Main St.) on Saturday, Aug. 17, to catch local singer-songwriters pay tribute to some of the original festival’s artists on the 50th anniversary of the fest. Paying tribute to Paul Butterfield/Canned Heat, Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix/Santana and the Band, respectively, will be Link and the Moustaches, Jakebrakes, Jenny Foidart, Tim Butler and Honeysliders. Tickets are $20 and are available at wfp.to/Woodstock. Just don’t take the brown acid, man.

Tool discography and new single

For many years, the rumours persisted that notoriously secretive band Tool was recording a new album and its extensive catalogue would be released online at the same time. During the 13 years between albums, this type of wishful thinking would build online, fuelled by detail-obsessed fans on Reddit, YouTube and Twitter. That all changed on a recent Joe Rogan podcast when lead singer Maynard James Keenan announced the band would be on digital platforms for the first time on Aug. 2, and the first single from the long-awaited album would also be available digitally. Fear Inoculum is a 10-minute prog-rock epic that the band’s fans have been dreaming of and have heard performed during recent tour dates. Tool is one of the last major artists to move its catalogue online. The Los Angeles rock group’s Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days can finally be included in your playlists and introduced to a whole new generation of rock fans.
