ERIN LEBAR / MUSIC
Local guitarist named as one of MusicRadar’s 10 best
Winnipeg-based singer-songwriter and guitarist extraordinare Ariel Posen has landed the No. 9 spot on music website MusicRadar’s list of the 10 best guitarists of 2019. Posen is listed alongside famous axe-wielders such as Slash, Justin and Dan Hawkins of the Darkness, John Mayer and Matt Bellamy, frontman of Muse, among others. “A bluesy Americana player, his beautiful slide work seems effortless (on a baritone with 16-64 strings no less!) but Ariel is putting everything into his craft — few are out there working harder. He’s also a player who puts the song first,” says the site’s blurb about Posen. Last month, Posen’s guitar skills were on full display in a video posted by Fender (http://wfp.to/arielposen) in which he jams out on a American Ultra Telecaster; that video has close to 200,000 views on YouTube, with many commenters making note of Posen’s exceptional playing.

Other outdoor skating options
Although the famed River Trail may not open this year due to high water levels on the Red and Assiniboine rivers, The Forks’ on-land skating trails are now open, as is the Canopy Rink. Iceland Skate Rentals, which is open daily in The Forks Market Atrium, offers $6 rentals for adults, and $4 rentals for kids and seniors. The Arctic Glacier Winter Park is also open for the season, with free programming — including horse-drawn wagon rides, Indigenous programming in the teepee and the outdoor dance party Soul on Ice — every Sunday from now until February.
