Art, music and more on tap at trio of downtown breweries
Three downtown breweries will play host to curious (and thirsty) Nuit Blanche-rs on Saturday, serving up lagers and ales while highlighting local artists.
Devil May Care Brewing Co. (155 Fort St.) is hosting audio and visual artists featuring a night of modular synthesizers and live, responsive projection art, with performances by Freakingsnap and Patrick Michalishyn. The event gets underway at 7 p.m., with the taproom staying open late.
Little Brown Jug Brewing Co. (336 William Ave.) hosts Belong: The Power of Music, which will feature light and sculpture installations by Just Friends Collective, as well as performances by Viva Non, Flying Fox, J. Jackson, Leossa, Kilma and Crab Skull. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
And Nonsuch Brewing Co. (125 Pacific Ave.) celebrates six years of beers with an event dubbed Off the Vine, which will feature limited-release brews (including a blackberry plum sour aged in brandy barrels, a French grape ale and a nitro piña colada brew, among others) as well as a DJ set by Anthony OKS, dance courtesy of Phantom Dances and projections by VJ Zef visuals. The event kicks off at 5 p.m.

Nuit Blanche @ CMHR
- Canadian Museum For Human Rights
- 6-11:55 p.m.
- Admission is free
What if the Red River was cared for as a relative or honoured as an ancestor in the eyes of the people who steward it? What if it held personhood status in the eyes of the law?
Those are the questions asked by Nibi (“water” in Anishinaabemowin), a new interactive project by Winnipeg-based Anishinaabe artist and curator Jaimie Isaac that will wash over the CMHR as part of Nuit Blanche.
Inspired by the 2017 law passed in New Zealand/Aotearoa granting legal personhood status to the Whanganui River — and therefore recognizing the Maori worldview that water is an ancestor — Nibi explores the issues of water protection and rights by considering possible futures for Winnipeg’s own sacred waterways.
Images and film will be projected onto the entryways of the CMHR, while speakers — including Isaac — will be sharing ideas about water sovereignty from 6 to 7 p.m.
Inside the museum, Manitoba Music will present a showcase of local acts — including rapper Osani Balkaran, producer collective MA BWE, DJs Louie Lovebird and the Kaptain, and the Lytics’ Gully — that will keep your body moving until midnight.

‘Skate Spot’ announced for the Exchange
- Old Market Square
- 6 p.m.
The Exchange District Biz is unveiling a piece of permanent skateboarding infrastructure in Old Market Square Saturday night. It’s not quite a park, the BIZ says, but more of a skateable sculpture. Or as the media release calls it: a piece of skateable furniture.
BIZ executive director David Pensato says the “Skate Spot” was designed to be “a little bit different from what’s currently available in Winnipeg. “It’s a little more ‘street,’ and a little less formal, which fits the Exchange District perfectly. It also has some great visual appeal as a sculpture, whether you skate it or use it as a selfie prop.”
The Skate Spot, designed with landscape architects Scatliff + Miller + Murray, will have its free inaugural session Saturday night, when the crew from SK8 Skates brings its best tricks to the Exchange District.
If you’re having trouble relaying your location to a friend, just gently remind them that you’re at the Spot, behind the Cube, in the Square.

BLACK LIGHT: Illuminating Music & Culture
- True North Square, 242 Hargrave St.
- 6 to 11 p.m
- Free
Flex your joints as you warm up for a night of dance and movement at 6 p.m. with a community yoga session at RNR Events’ Nuit Blanche debut, which promises a five-hour extravaganza of music, art and performances.
As night creeps in, the volume goes up with DJ Chubby D and DJ Swift taking over the decks, spinning R&B, reggae, soul, hip hop, soca and Afrobeat tunes.
A collaboration between RNR Events and Black History Manitoba, the party will bring a “different flavour” to the proceedings.
“We will be representing and celebrating the music and culture we love together with Black History Manitoba,” says Shawn Thomas of RNR. “Special guests will keep things entertaining, and you might learn a few things along the way!”
The free event is open to all. You must be of legal drinking age for liquor purchases.

A celebration of grief
- Artspace, 304-100 Arthur St.
- 6 p.m. to midnight
Grief can be both a personal and communal experience. Delve into loss this Saturday with UNDAS, a celebratory exhibit that explores grief through the lens of the Filipina, Filipino and Filipinx diaspora.
The multimedia exhibition will feature installations, prints, film and music. Participating artists include Charina Duenas, Charles Romero Venzon, Karen Remoto, Maribeth Tabanera (a.k.a. Kilusan), MC de Natividad and Nathan Flores.
In the Philippines, Undas is an annual tradition akin to All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which sees the community gather to celebrate the lives of religious saints and departed loved ones.
The show aims to share aspects of this and other lesser-known cultural practices with the public.
