The eighth annual Winnipeg Tattoo Convention runs Friday through Sunday at Red River Exhibition Park.

The air will be filled with the buzz of needle guns as over 250 artists gather at Red River Exhibition Park this weekend for the eighth annual Winnipeg Tattoo Convention.

Whether you’ve been toying with the idea of your first ink or are looking to add to your collection, the three-day event is sure to inspire and excite tattoo enthusiasts and the tattoo-curious. Artists from around the world will be convening at the show — bring your best custom art or choose from pre-drawn designs and go under the needle.

Many of the artists are taking bookings for the weekend in advance — it’s recommended you check out winnipegtattooconvention.com to see their work and whether they’re able to fit you in. Alternatively, some artists will be taking appointments on the spot.

The Winnipeg Tattoo Convention has plenty going on beyond getting inked, including a beer garden, merchandise, a market, food trucks and live music (including Sol James, Jamie Buckboro, Jess Rae, Curtis Newton and Norah Erickson).

Tickets are $30 per day plus taxes, or $70 for a weekend pass at wfp.to/iRw.

Nikki Glaser

  • Centennial Concert Hall, 555 Main St.
  • Tonight and Friday, 7 p.m.
  • Tickets: $62.50-$171.50 at centennialconcerthall.com

For two decades, Nikki Glaser has been putting in the work.

The razor-sharp American comedian, actor, podcast host and celebrity roastess with the mostess has slowly but surely become one of comedy’s heavyweights, cracking the mainstream in 2024 for her biting performance on The Roast of Tom Brady on Netflix.

In 2025, Glaser became the first woman to host the Golden Globes solo, a role she reprised in 2026 and will return to in 2027. Later that year, in front a sold-out crowd in her hometown of St. Louis, Mo., she recorded her fifth comedy special, Nikki Glaser: Good Girl, which came out on Disney+ earlier this year.

Glaser brings her Stunning tour to Winnipeg this week for a two-night stand. Friday night’s show is long sold out, and limited tickets remain for tonight.

MATT HORSEMAN / SUPPLIED

Menno Simone is Michael Barkman’s drag alter ego.

Menno Simone is the ceiling-smashing drag alter-ego of Winnipeg’s Michael Barkman. This seven-foot-tall inside joke heads to Assiniboine Park for an evening of energetic drag, dance and live music.

The performance is part of the park’s summer entertainment series, with backing by an all-star band of Justin Alcock, Ash Au, Domo Lemoine, Gage Salnikowski and Paulo Diaz-Flores. Dancers Jillian Daien and Erin Meagan Schwartz will keep the crowd moving.

After a sold-out performance in February at Public Domain for her “Vegas Residency,” this Menno Simone show is an accessible, family-friendly opportunity to experience the joy of drag.

The park’s live entertainment series continues at the Lyric on Sunday evening with a free performance by El Leon & the Strangers.

Ami Cheon album release

Ami Cheon releases her debut EP Friday.

HOUSE OF AYOZAK / SUPPLIED

Ami Cheon releases her debut EP Friday.

Ami Cheon is a big fan of Winnipeg’s vibrant music scene, often describing the city as the “Nashville of Canada.”

The R&B-pop artist has become a fixture of the scene herself since moving to Winnipeg from Regina in 2017. She is a frequent headliner at events, such as Festival du Voyageur, and has collaborated with Jaywood and other local acts.

Cheon releases her debut EP, aries baby, Friday at the Times Change(d), which she promises to transform into an “ethereal girly-pop oasis” for one night only. The dress code is dramatic and intentionally overdressed.

Ticketholders can expect to hear the five-track album played front-to-back, plus cameos by some special guests.

Jets bench boss Arniel talks rebuilding from last season’s struggles

Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe 12 minute read Yesterday at 5:42 PM CDT

Scott Arniel has a lot on his plate these days.

But the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets took some time Thursday to sit down with Free Press hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe to discuss a number of topics on the eve of a new hockey season. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Wiebe: What was the evaluation of last season like? What did you personally do in an attempt to improve after going from first-overall to 26th-overall?

I just went back and looked at things and made sure my communication was where it needed to be with my players. Was my communication where it needed to be with my boss, with my general manager (Kevin Cheveldayoff)? How our coaching staff worked. How we handled highs and lows. Things I felt I could have done better.

Face up to fact you blew it with ex-wife

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My ex-wife just moved back to town and looks like a changed woman. She spent years married to me, and our kids just graduated in a city where we once lived together. That was without help from me, other than minor financial stuff.

She has found a great new job back in Winnipeg and she’ll do very well. I admire her more than any other woman I ever met, but she’s not interested in me at all.

I once had a solid, responsible job and then got into drinking, and I cheated on her. That’s why she left town. Now I’ve been sober and sorry for many years.

I asked her last weekend if I could take her out to dinner and she said no and changed the subject.

Woman took ‘meaningful’ responsibility after disposing of body: lawyer

Dean Pritchard 5 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

A woman who was threatened with death if she didn’t help dispose the body of a Mexican man murdered in the basement of a North End home should serve no more jail time, a judge has been told.

Devlin Langlois, 25, has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the March 2025 killing of 28-year-old Diego Moscoza.

“By pleading guilty, Ms. Langlois has already taken meaningful accountability for her actions,” defence lawyer Joshua Rogala told King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond at a sentencing hearing Monday.

He urged the judge to sentence Langlois to the equivalent of 14 months already served, plus two years supervised probation.

You’re a solid, loyal sister, so worry not

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I ran into my sister’s husband at the bar recently. He was drinking with a bunch of people from his work. I noticed he was sitting close to a young woman, with his arm around her.

I just nodded without a smile as I slowly passed them. I kept on going, but he knew I saw them together. A few minutes later he came over — obviously drunk — and said, “You’re a good girl! You won’t say anything to your sister, will you?” Ha! I looked at him and said, “Of course I’m going to say something!”

My loyalty will always be to my sister. I phoned my sis in my car and blabbed. She tried to laugh it off, but she’s gone silent since — not answering my calls or messages. So apparently now I’m the troublemaker? That’d be just her style! What should I do?
