Local musicians semifinalists in Top of the Country competition

Winnipeg country artist Don Amero, as well as Tim Neufeld and Jon Mushaluk from the band Tim and the Glory Boys, are among eight semifinalists in Sirius XM’s Top of the Country competition, vying for a prize of $25,000. Fans can help the local contingent make it to the finals by voting online at topcountry.siriusxm.ca once a day until Friday, May 17. The three artists with the most votes will win the opportunity to participate in a mentorship program with major industry professionals and take part in a SOCAN songwriting camp in Nashville. They will also perform at the Top of the Country finale during Country Music Week in Calgary, where they will battle it out on stage for the cash prize.

Flatlander’s beer fest returns this June

With the Winnipeg Wine Festival in the rear-view mirror, local imbibers can now turn their focus to drinks made from hops, malt and yeast — beer. The 17th annual Flatlander’s Beer Festival returns Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, at Bell MTS Place, with proceeds once again benefiting the True North Youth Foundation. Tickets aren’t yet on sale, and information on the beer being poured at ice level and around the concourse of the home of the Winnipeg Jets should be available shortly. With over 100 booths featuring all manner of lagers, ales and beyond, this year’s lineup promises to once again bring a strong focus on local breweries, brew pubs and more. Check in at flatlandersbeerfest.com in the coming days for information on tickets and available brews.

Where did all the likes go?

If you are an Instagram user or someone who lurks but doesn’t post, chances are you have noticed that the app is hiding the number of likes that each photo receives. While you’ll be able to see your own metrics, Instagram is using Canada as a testing ground for this new approach to social media. Should this test spread to the rest of Instagram, it will be one of the largest paradigm shifts in how social media operates.
