SUPPLIED Gerardo Chavez is the founder of Visual Ambassadors, which is an Instagram hub that has amassed a following of more than 600,000 photographers from all corners of the world.

Chavez, 33, officially made the move to Winnipeg in March 2017 from Aguascalientes, Mexico, after attending the University of Winnipeg a few years earlier.

The Instagram site (@VisualAmbassadors) features a new photographic ambassador at least once a day, with an emphasis on vibrant streetscapes and landscapes.

FP: How did your interest in photography and Instagram come about?

Chavez: I started taking photos in 2007 when my parents gave me a small pocket camera as a birthday present. Experimented with angles, focus, perspectives and later, when Instagram came out, I saw a very good potential as a photography platform and later as a social network.

FP: Why did you start Visual Ambassadors?

GC: I started Visual Ambassadors in December of 2015 because I wanted to showcase the Instagram gems, especially the small ones, those who usually are ignored by big hubs for not being popular. Visual Ambassadors is a community — or commonly known as an Instagram hub.

FP: You have over 600k followers. What do you attribute that success to?

GC: I attribute its worldly success due to the fact we always focused on featuring small accounts and being inclusive, not exclusive. Inclusion is the key. There are lots of hubs on Instagram, although I believe VA is in the top ten in North America.

FP: What’s next for you and VA?

GC: I’m still doing what I like and that is taking photos, as long as the weather allows it of course, and editing them. I really enjoy it and I dedicate a good chunk of my day doing that. And for VA, we (he now runs the hub with Yaroslav Blohkin (@jamakassi), who is from Krasnodar, Russia) will continue working hard on showcasing the hidden gems and become bigger and better.

‘He was shaping a generation of young artists’: Winnipeg director Rob Herriot has died at 60

Prolific Winnipeg director and performer Rob Herriot has died.

Herriot was well known for his work within opera and musical theatre in Winnipeg and across North America. He died Friday at 60 years old. Loved ones described his death as sudden, and the cause had not yet been determined Sunday.

“He was such an enormous part of the opera community locally here in Winnipeg… as a director, he was shaping a generation of young artists in the community,” Manitoba Opera executive director Michael Blais said Sunday. “I think that’s what the real loss is to the opera community, in that way.”

Herriot’s work in Manitoba included directing productions of Cosí fan Tutte, Madama Butterfly, La Bohème, Carmen, and, most recently, The Marriage of Figaro for Manitoba Opera, Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast for Rainbow Stage, and Three Decembers, The Walk from the Garden and The House Without a Christmas Tree for the Little Opera Company.

Winnipeg police are asking for the public's help as they try to find a man who was seen with a submachine gun-style weapon at a Henderson Highway hotel Saturday night.

A suspect has not yet been located, the police service stated in a news release Sunday. The man allegedly sprayed bear spray inside the Curtis Gordon Hotel (1011 Henderson Hwy.) and brandished the gun just before midnight Saturday. A witness captured video of the man walking across the hotel parking lot while armed with the weapon. The video was circulated on social media, where a post compared the weapon to an "uzi" submachine gun. Police located an airgun at the scene.

"Officers flooded the area in search of the suspect but he was not located. During the search, police recovered a CO2-powered gun that matched the appearance of the weapon seen in the video. However, investigators cannot confirm at this time whether the recovered gun is the same weapon shown in the footage. Until proven otherwise, police are treating the incident as involving a real firearm," the WPS news release stated.

The suspect is described as a tall, thin man with a light complexion. He was carrying a black backpack and was wearing a grey sweater, beige pants and a black baseball cap with white lettering.

Tip of the cap: Former Bomber Kolankowski says fan response on his return was special

HAMILTON — Chris Kolankowski saw it coming.

He had a feeling he was going to be the odd man out after the Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed fellow veteran Canadian centre Tui Eli at the end of December.

“I heard what the details of that were and I was kind of concerned once I saw the numbers,” Kolankowski told the Free Press on Saturday.

Soon after, he got a call from head coach Mike O’Shea that confirmed his hunch.
