What a view
Here’s your chance to see Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece A View from the Bridge when it is broadcast live from London’s West End at 7 p.m. on March 26 at SilverCity Polo Park. The Young Vic’s acclaimed production was The Evening Standard, Guardian and Independent newspapers’ top theatre pick of 2014. Miller confronts the American dream in this dark and passionate tale starring The Imitation Game actor Mark Strong. There will be an encore presentation on May 2.

TV’s righteous-drama power couple
Few people took notice when Mark Burnett and Roma Downey announced they were getting into the TV-miniseries production business — after all, he’s most recognized for his reality-TV work (Survivor, The Apprentice, The Voice), and she’s an actress (Touched By An Angel) whose career has completely cooled off. But after their first major scripted project, The Bible, was a huge success for History TV, doors began to open for the duo. This spring, they’ve got two major titles on U.S. network TV — The Dovekeepers, a four-part drama (premièring March 31 on CBS and Global) based on the like-titled historical novel by Alice Hoffman, and A.D.: The Bible Continues, a 12-episode sequel that debuts April 5 on NBC.

Guess Who still alive, so is its schism
Courageous curating by the Red River Ex will bring the Guess Who back to Winnipeg on June 17. This is no reunification though. While many rock fans connect the Guess Who with singer Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman, the name belongs to co-founder Jim Kale, who still has original drummer Garry Peterson in the band. It will be those two, and not Cummings and Bachman, who will front the Guess Who’s appearance at the Red River Ex concert stage. The band’s fans, like the band, are split; some will be glad to hear the hits of their youth once more, while some say Kale, Peterson and company are a pale imitation of the group that became rock ‘n’ roll legends.

A glass slipper with a beer chaser
You would be correct in assuming the McGillivray VIP theatres are for adults only: they are the only cinemas in town where you can get liquor service during the show. But curiously, the raunchy comedy Get Hard is bypassing the VIP in favour of a third-week hold-over of Kenneth Branagh’s G-rated, live-action Cinderella, which is edging up to the four-week VIP run of Fifty Shades of Grey. It appears the VIP cinemas are the go-to venue for a wide spectrum of female fantasies.

Oregon stout gets hot-sauce treatment
Grapefruit, maple syrup, coffee, vanilla, ginger: all flavours that can be found in beers we see (or have seen) in the Manitoba market. The appearance of a new-to-us brew by Oregon’s Rogue Ales will certainly kick things up a notch. Rogue’s Sriracha Hot Stout is an intense, in-your-face dark beer that features the addition of the legendary California-made hot sauce, bringing some serious spice. Quantities are limited in Manitoba — check the Liquor Marts website (liquormarts.ca) for availability. And it ain’t cheap — a 750-ml bottle of the Sriracha Hot Stout will set you back $17.53 plus taxes.
