“I recently returned from doing a poetry reading in Victoria, so I had a long plane ride and was able to read some of what was on my night table. I read Winnipegger Dora Dueck’s recently published collection, What You Get at Home, and thoroughly enjoyed the stories. In Victoria, I picked up a used $3 copy of Thomas Merton’s The New Seeds of Contemplation and found myself reading it obsessively on the way back to Winnipeg. Back at home, still on the nightstand, are Virginia Woolf’s classic novel Mrs. Dalloway and Betsy Warland’s Breathing the Page: Reading the Act of Writing, a wonderful book on the art of writing.”

MPI gambles with low rate request

Editorial 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

It sounds a bit like a gamble from a player in an industry that is almost pathologically averse to gambling.

Manitoba Public Insurance is currently going through the Public Utilities Board process to set car insurance rates for 2027-28, and it’s asking the PUB to approve a 2.38 rate hike.

As a provincially-run insurance business, MPI is already a bit of an outlier, because, through its government masters, it’s answerable to the Manitoba public in a way that private insurers aren’t.

Private insurers spend a fortune calculating risk, offsetting that risk with reinsurance to spread it out across the insurance spectrum, and always finding a way to ensure there’s a profit margin built in.

Winnipeg soldiers help search and rescue efforts in Wainwright

Kelly-Anne Riess 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:39 PM CDT

Eleven military search and rescue technicians from Winnipeg were deployed to Wainwright, Alta., following the fire that killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during a live-fire training exercise Saturday.

It was the largest mobilization of SAR techs, elite primary-care paramedics in the Royal Canadian Air Force, in recent memory, a military spokesperson told the Free Press.

Every SAR tech available from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron, located at 17 Wing Winnipeg — even those off duty — were sent to CFB Wainwright.

The technicians, who are trained to jump from aircraft into extreme environments, parachuted onto the scene from a CC-130H Hercules airplane to provide care for those injured in the fast-moving grass fire that had engulfed a training area.

New blood in St. Vital

Joyanne Pursaga 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:02 PM CDT

Candidates to fill the wide-open St. Vital city council seat are sharing their plans to ease traffic, tighten up development rules, protect trees and improve Winnipeg Transit.

Coun. Brian Mayes led the ward since 2011 but is not running for re-election, guaranteeing a new city councillor will be chosen.

Chris Sigurdson, a Louis Riel School Division trustee and criminal defence lawyer, is competing for the job with Mayes’ endorsement.

Sigurdson said his trustee work over the last 16 years provided a valuable education in local government that he could apply at city hall.
