Manitoba Book Awards releases short list

The Manitoba Book Awards has unveiled the short lists for the literary prizes to be presented this year.

For the 2026 awards, jurors evaluated 42 submissions in both English and French, and will present six prizes in total for best first book as well as best fiction, non-fiction and poetry, plus the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award and a prize for French literature.

Three books received multiple nominations — Catherine Hunter’s short-story collection Seeing You Home, Zilla Jones’ debut novel The World So Wide and R.Y. Abdulrehman’s first novel Jinn in the Family each received two nods.

In 2024, a feasibility study commissioned by organizers deemed the Manitoba Book Awards unsustainable, resulting in a two-year hiatus. A board of arts workers and writers now administers the prizes; after this year’s scaled-down return, a larger rollout is planned for 2027.

The Manitoba Book Awards will be presented at noon on Sept. 19, at the Park Theatre (698 Osborne St.) at a free event. The complete list of finalists is available at manitobabookawards.ca.

Obsessed stalker who shot, killed young woman at bus stop in 1993 dies behind bars at age 74

A Winnipeg man who stalked a woman for several years before shooting her dead in the street in 1993 has died in Stony Mountain prison.

On Monday, 74-year-old Ronald Edd Bell died of apparent natural causes at the federal prison just north of Winnipeg, the Correctional Service of Canada said.

Bell had been in prison since May 30, 1994, when he was given a life sentence with no chance of parole for 18 years for killing Terry-Lyn Babb, 25, on Jan. 21, 1993.

Bell walked up behind an unsuspecting Babb, who was waiting at a bus stop at Sherbrook Street and Wolseley Avenue, and shot her in the head with a pistol in front of horrified witnesses, says the Free Press report of his sentencing hearing.

Dynacare workers provide essential services that must be maintained during strike, labour board rules

Nicole Buffie 3 minute read 3:57 PM CDT

The Manitoba Labour Board has ruled Dynacare workers are essential employees and their services must be maintained during a labour dispute.

The ruling, issued Thursday afternoon, said the board was satisfied that essential services “must be maintained in the event of job action involving Dynacare and the (Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals) in order to prevent a threat to the health, safety and welfare of residents of Manitoba.”

The private company’s 350 lab technicians and technologists in Winnipeg, Brandon and other communities went on strike briefly Sept. 8 before the labour board issued an interim order forcing them back to work while it decided the essential-services question.

The dispute is over a significant wage gap between what Dynacare workers and people doing the same work in the public health-care sector earn. The Dynacare workers have been without a contract since March 31.
