U.S. president-elect Donald Trump has been brandishing threats about turning Canada into the 51st state — something Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says is a diversion tactic to distract from the very real threat of a proposed 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods.

Trump’s comments have certainly caught the attention of the figureheads of one of America’s more venerated institutions: late-night talk shows. Here’s what the hosts had to say about it earlier this week:

“Trump’s also been making a bunch of unhinged claims about absorbing Canada as the 51st state and even made a suggestion about who their next prime minister should be,” Meyers joked on Tuesday, after the president-elect also suggested hockey legend Wayne Gretzky should lead Canada.

“I mean, I think Trump picked Wayne Gretzky because that’s the only Canadian he knows. I also think the prime minister of Ireland should be the Lucky Charms mascot.”

JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE:

“For whatever reason, Trump loves — he enjoys terrorizing our allies. Putin? Good guy. Canada?,” Kimmel scoffed Tuesday, with a mocking shrug.

“He’s like Darth Vader. Come to the dark side, or else. Trump today suggested he’ll consider using economic force to get Canada to become part of the United States, and if that doesn’t get him the Nobel Prize I don’t know what is gonna.”

THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON:

“President-elect Trump wants the United States and Canada to merge. Right now everyone who moved to Canada after Trump won is like ‘Well, I guess it’s off to the North Pole. I mean, what do we do? Where do I gotta go? What do we do?,”‘ Fallon joked Tuesday.

“I don’t know, if you think America is divided now, imagine if half the country spelled colour with a ‘U,'” he continued.

“Yep, Trump wants to merge with Canada. I feel like we’re close to him offering a throuple with Mexico.”

A man who picked up a vulnerable 17-year-old child-welfare ward on the streets of Winnipeg and coerced her into providing sexual services for several months has been sent to prison for more than a decade.

After a trial, Hassan Kargbo, who’s in his early 30s, was found guilty of sexual exploitation, making child sexual abuse and exploitation material, receiving a material benefit from sexual services provided by a person under 18, procuring a person under 18 and advertising sexual services.

Provincial court Judge Julie Frederickson sentenced him to 11 years behind bars late last month.

“Mr. Kargbo picked up a young Indigenous girl walking over the Osborne Street bridge and quickly got her involved in drug use and escorting,” Frederickson said in a written decision.

‘Amazing honour’: Winnipeg distribution centre continues award-winning ways for McKesson Canada

After a three-year absence, the trophy is back in Winnipeg.

Last week, McKesson Canada named its 120,000-square-foot pharmaceutical distribution centre in the northwest part of the Manitoba capital its Distribution Centre of the Year. The award recognizes the facility’s role in helping essential medications reach communities across the province and some of Canada’s remote regions.

This is the fourth time the Winnipeg facility has earned the company-wide award since it opened five years ago. McKesson previously honoured the centre in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The recognition comes with a trophy, as well as a banner that was hung from the rafters on Thursday.

More than 100 employees work across the centre’s day-and-night operations, processing between 80,000 and 100,000 medication units daily. Last year, the centre distributed more than 21 million medication units while maintaining more than 99 per cent accuracy.

13 guns seized from West St. Paul homes

1 minute read Yesterday at 12:28 PM CDT

Two men have been charged with a number of firearms offences after an RCMP investigation into illegal weapons in West St. Paul yielded the seizure of more than a dozen firearms last month.

RCMP investigators from the Manitoba Integrated Law Enforcement Team, which probes organized and serious crime in the province, began looking into the two suspects on a tip from the Canada Border Services Agency.

Officers obtained warrants to search two homes, one on Pipeline Road and the other on Griffin Way, on Sept. 11.

Between the two houses, Mounties found 13 guns, including two that were sawed off, about 20,000 rounds of ammunition and several high-capacity magazines that had been altered to hold more ammunition than is legally allowed.

Estate of woman who died from local anesthetic injected into blood vessel sues Morden dentist, his business, clinic

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 4:08 PM CDT

The estate of a 23-year-old woman who died after receiving a local anesthetic during a wisdom tooth extraction at a Morden dental clinic has filed a lawsuit over her death.

Virginia Blatz never returned home after she went to Boundary Trails Dental Centre to have her wisdom teeth removed on Nov. 27, 2024. An autopsy later confirmed she died from local anesthetic systemic toxicity caused by an inadvertent injection into a blood vessel, her family has previously said.

Her father, Dulaney Blatz, filed a lawsuit in the Court of King’s Bench on behalf of her estate late last month, naming Ronald David Janz — the dentist who performed the procedure — his dental corporation and the dental corporation that operates the clinic as defendants.

None of the defendants have filed statements of defence in response to the claim, which has not yet been heard in court.
