If YouTube’s year-end data is any clue, Canada is deeply in its K-pop era.

The streaming platform says Netflix’s hit animated musical film “KPop Demon Hunters” was a major driver of engagement in 2025, with several of its tracks becoming Canada’s most-watched music videos and shorts.

Meanwhile, “APT” — American singer Bruno Mars’ collaboration with K-pop star Rosé — ranked as the country’s top song of the year. It also became the fastest K-pop track to reach 1 billion views on YouTube, beating “Gangnam Style.”

“KPop Demon Hunters” songs including “Golden,” “How It’s Done” and “Soda Pop” also cracked the top songs list, with the latter additionally ranking among the country’s most-watched shorts, which are YouTube’s vertical short-form videos.

A slowed-down version of Brazilian funk song “Passo Bem Solto,” by Italian producer Atlxs, was Canada’s most-watched short.

“KPop Demon Hunters” — produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released by Netflix — is the debut film from Korean-Canadian director Maggie Kang.

Netflix says it’s the streaming giant’s most popular film of all time, racking up more than 236 million views.

The film’s soundtrack also made history this year, becoming the first movie soundtrack to land four songs in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 at the same time in the chart’s 67-year history.

In an interview with the Canadian Press this year, Kang said it felt “pretty wild” to watch the film become a global hit after spending her childhood hiding her love of K-pop as a Korean immigrant growing up in 1990s Toronto.

“I remember hiding my K-pop albums from my white friends because they thought it was weird and silly,” recalled Kang, who moved from Seoul to Canada at age five and was raised in the North York area.

“But I was like, ‘No, this is great.”‘

Furby Street residents fed up with inaction on drug houses

Carol Sanders 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:39 AM CDT

Anxious Furby Street residents contacted the city and their elected officials Friday to — once again — report people coming and going from a boarded-up house they call a dangerous “drug centre” and “den of thieves” that’s just steps away from a house under construction.

Linda Zak, who was holding a yard sale with a group of neighbours Friday morning, described the trouble the home attracts, while a woman slumped on the front steps and a man standing in the yard yelled to someone inside it.

“It is a drug centre,” said Zak, 77. “We know that. A couple of days ago, a person lit the front on fire. Now, as you look at it, you can see where the facade was burning and they were trying to harm people inside.”

“We’re very concerned about it being next to the home this man is building,” she said, pointing to the two-storey that’s nearly completed. The boarded-up house is in the 500 block of Furby.

Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan announced late Monday afternoon he is quitting caucus and will sit in the legislature as an independent MLA, effective today.

He cited internal party fighting for his decision.

The former Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive lineman survived a caucus confidence vote Friday. He said there were 13 votes for him to remain and six against, with one person absent.

Orange Shirt Day project fits students to a tee

On the eve of Orange Shirt Day, hundreds of black T-shirts will be handed out to teenagers at Elmwood High School — and there wasn’t a mixup in the clothing procurement process.

The student-run business behind the initiative wanted to make a statement about “truth and reconciliation” being a year-round activity, said Daniel Concepcion, a Grade 12 student.

Daniel said given that black is a staple in the wardrobe of teenagers, he hopes these shirts won’t sit on hangers for 364 days of the year.

“Every child matters, every part of the day, every day,” the 17-year-old said.

Hydro reports $446-M loss in 2025-26, points to fourth drought year in past five

Scott Billeck 3 minute read 6:38 PM CDT

Manitoba Hydro posted a $446-million loss in 2025-26, as drought conditions slashed hydroelectric generation, forcing the Crown corporation to buy more power while leaving it with less electricity to sell outside the province.

The loss was $666 million worse than the $220-million profit Hydro had budgeted. The utility posted a $63-million loss the previous year, according to the utility’s annual report released Tuesday.

Hydro said the 2025-26 fiscal year, which ended on March 31, marked its fourth low-water year in the past five years, among the worst stretches of water-flow conditions in its recorded history.

Hydroelectric generation fell 23 per cent to 24 billion kilowatt-hours from 31 billion the previous year, leaving Hydro a net importer of electricity.
