Argo star Affleck praises Canadian hero Ken Taylor

WASHINGTON — Hollywood’s Ben Affleck praised Canadian hero Ken Taylor Wednesday night in the United States capital as he promoted his new film, Argo.

The films tells the story of how a CIA expert helped engineer the escape of six Americans who were sheltered by Canadians during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis.

Taylor became a hero after sheltering the Americans for three months and was originally critical of Argo, saying it minimized Canada’s role in the crisis.

The original postscript to the film suggested the kudos Taylor received for his role in the real-life drama were undeserved in light of the CIA operation.

But Affleck said last night that he was happy to add an amended postscript to the film, adding he considered Taylor a friend and ally in promoting Argo.

Taylor said he was grateful to see Affleck emphasize the importance of Canada during the crisis while the actor promotes the film.

During a gathering at the Canadian Embassy, the daughter of one of the six surviving U.S. diplomats rescued by Taylor thanked him profusely for saving her father.

Argo opens in theatres today.
