Cineplex is changing the name of its busiest local multiplex to Scotiabank Theatre Winnipeg.

The rebrand of the theatre complex at the corner of St. James Street and Silver Avenue comes in the wake of an announcement in November of last year of a 10-year extension to Cineplex’s Scene loyalty program, which gave naming rights for two additional Scotiabank theatres. The other theatre to get a name change will be SilverCity Gloucester Cinemas in Ottawa.

The Scene program is tied into Scotiabanks’ Scene debit card and Scene Prepaid Visa card, which awards points to over seven million members redeemable at Cineplex on admissions and other purchases.

Winnipeg comes relatively late to the Scotiabank name game. Cineplex currently operates Scotiabank Theatres in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and St. John’s. Scotiabank is also presenting sponsor of Cineplex VIP Cinemas.

Cineplex’s director of communications Sarah Van Lange confirms the Polo Park venue is “the most well attended theatre in the Winnipeg, if not the province.”

She says there will be no other changes to the location when it comes to the price of admissions or concessions.

“There are no changes to the operating business at all as this is a naming rights agreement only,” she told the Free Press. “Aside from several signage updates throughout the interior and exterior of the buildings, no other changes are being implemented at this time.”

SilverCity Polo Park opened for business in December of 1999 at a cost of $24 million.
