NICKELBACK leads this year’s 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards nominations, with five nods including the big one: Video of the Year.

But wait, they’re — gasp! — tied for first place. Could there really be an exception to Nickelback’s all-out dominance of Canadian awards shows (See: 2009 Junos)? Toronto-based R&B newcomer Danny Fernandes is also leading the race with five nominations, including Video of the Year and UR Fave New Artist of the Year.

Other multiple nominees include Vancouver pop-punks Marianas Trench (four nods), and hip-hop artist k-os, Bedouin Soundclash, alt-rockers the Midway State, post-grunge band Theory of a Deadman and Nova Scotia MC Classified with three nods apiece.

The awards show takes place in Toronto on Sunday, June 21.

Double nominees — and provokers of early onset female puberty — the Jonas Brothers are already set to co-host the annual bash, which will feature a performance from their fellow fans’-choice nominee for favourite international video, Lady Gaga.

A shortage of judges is forcing Manitoba’s provincial court to slash sittings across the province.

The court announced in a notice to the profession Wednesday that it will be reducing the number of annual court sittings at nine rural circuit locations and St. Boniface provincial court in Winnipeg by 68 sittings, effective April 1, 2027.

The reductions are necessary to balance “access to justice needs with the complement of judicial resources currently insufficient to maintain the current court schedule,” said the notice, signed by provincial court Chief Judge Ryan Rolston.

Affected circuit courts include Altona, Arborg, Beausejour, Easterville, Cranberry Portage, Lundar, Grand Rapids, Moose Lake, and Pine Falls.

Province, firm deny responsibility in Virden aquifer failure

The provincial government and a consulting firm being sued by the Town of Virden both say the community’s municipal government is to blame for the failure of its water supply system.

In a statement of claim filed earlier this year in the Court of King’s Bench, the town said it is seeking damages for what it alleges were “untrue, misleading and/or negligently made” representations it received from both the province, through its Manitoba Water Services Board, and engineering and geological consultant W.I. Gibbons and Associates.

Virden, which had been struggling with water quality issues, entered an agreement with the water board in 2019 to investigate groundwater supply. The board retained the consultant, which recommended in a 2020 report that the town draw water from a new aquifer, referred to as the Leask aquifer in court filings.

The new aquifer and pipes, which the town began using in 2021, cost $3 million and replaced one that was found to have arsenic levels above Health Canada’s drinking water safety guidelines.
