Manitobans have a pretty good shot at taking home hardware in their home province at this year’s Western Canadian Music Awards.

A total of 43 musicians and industry players will be vying for awards in 25 different categories when the awards show visits Brandon in September, it was announced yesterday.

Old-time folkies the Duhks, rock band the Waking Eyes, composer Sid Robinovitch and singer-songwriters Scott Nolan, J.P. Hoe and Romi Mayes lead the Manitoba contingent with two nominations each.

In total, 146 nominees from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon will compete for 31 artistic and industry awards.

Manitoba artists dominated in the aboriginal, children’s, roots duo/group and songwriter of the year categories with three artists nominated in the aboriginal and children’s categories, and four artists fighting it in the roots album of the year and songwriter categories.

The seventh annual WCMAs take place from Sept. 17 to 20 in the wheat city. A street party starts the show Thursday before things move inside for a two-day club series at seven different venues.

The industry awards are presented at a brunch on Sept. 19, while the artistic awards are handed out the following night at Brandon’s Centennial Auditorium.

Paquin Entertainment Group founder Gilles Paquin will be honoured with the Industry Builder Award.
