Two seemingly odd musical partners — the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Dauphin’s Countryfest — are teaming up for a special concert in August at the country music jamboree’s festival site.

On Aug. 24, the WSO will perform at the Selo Ukraina site, where Countryfest has made its home the past 25 years, for a show dubbed Symphony Under the Sky.

WSO musical director Alexander Mickelthwate says, in a release, that the orchestra will perform classical pieces from Khachaturian, Brahms and Beethoven and rock ’n’ roll classics from the likes of Elvis Presley.

“In celebration of Countryfest’s 25th anniversary, we’re featuring other special performances this year. Symphony Under the Sky is one of these performances,” says Dauphin’s Countryfest president Eric Irwin.

Tickets, including fees and taxes, are $30 for adults and $18 for teens. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available online at www.countryfest.com and www.watsonartcentre.com.

Manitoba Public Insurance told the Public Utilities Board Tuesday it didn’t factor in reinsurance costs related to devastating summer storms in its application for an increase to vehicle insurance rates.

Cara Low, the Crown corporation’s chief actuary, told the board that given MPI anticipates an increase to reinsurance premiums, the 2.38 per cent increase listed in its application won’t be adequate to cover its costs.

“There’s going to be a significant increase. We still have to decide how much we want to retain, what we want the coverage to look like, and what the upper end needs to be,” she said on the opening day of a three-week hearing.

Nearly 41,000 claims have been submitted in relation to summer storms that swept across southern Manitoba from June to August. Floods, tornadoes and hail pummelled several communities and forced MPI to open satellite claims centres to deal with the record number of calls.

Gang member who shot rival, bystander back in prison after release revoked

A Winnipeg man who shot a rival teenage gangster and an innocent 11-year-old bystander at the crowded Red River Exhibition more than four years ago has been sent back to prison.

Mocree Chuck Scatch-Dubour, now in his early 20s, left prison in April on statutory release on his 5 1/2-year federal sentence for the 2022 shooting. Scatch-Dubour was sentenced to the prison term as an adult in the spring of 2023 after pleading guilty to discharge of a firearm with intent to wound, aggravated assault and possession of a restricted firearm.

By law, most federal inmates automatically receive statutory release after two-thirds of their sentence, if they have not already been paroled.

Parole Board of Canada officials formally revoked Scatch-Dubour’s release this month after he unlawfully left his halfway house in June.

Former Oilers teammates square off for first time

Calvin Pickard has been many things to Stuart Skinner.

An ally, sounding board, confidante and most importantly, a close friend.

They were a goalie tandem for parts of three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, making two trips to the Stanley Cup final, combining for 29 playoff wins, but falling just short of achieving the ultimate goal on both of those occasions.

They were opponents just once last season when the Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins met for the first time since the trade that shipped Skinner to Pennsylvania, but it was Tristan Jarry – the guy he was traded for – standing at the opposite side of the rink.

Cole Perfetti has made it clear he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself.

The Winnipeg Jets winger has first-hand knowledge on how humbling the NHL can be, coming off a quiet campaign as he worked his way back from a high ankle sprain.

But with the benefit of a full summer of training and a return to health, Perfetti has taken advantage of his promotion to the top line and quickly shown he belongs.

The latest proof came Tuesday, with Perfetti scoring a pair of goals — including the game-winner — in a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild at Canada Life Centre.

A Winnipeg man previously found not criminally responsible for a violent assault on his father has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting four women and a teen girl in and around the Health Sciences Centre last year.

Donovan Mohammed, 29, admitted responsibility for the attacks, on Friday in Winnipeg court. He remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date following the completion of a court-ordered pre-sentence report.

Mohammed admitted to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and four women — all strangers to him — within the span of an hour on July 2, 2025.

Court heard three of Mohammed’s victims were nurses and three of the assaults were captured on security video.

Time to intervene on hubby and therapy ‘buddy’

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My husband has been going to a therapy group to work through some trauma in his past. He seems almost high when he comes home — always in too good a mood and plays his guitar for hours. He won’t come to bed with me either and doesn’t want to make love those nights.

I just found out from a female friend who also goes to this therapy group that one of my man’s exes turns out to be in this same group. She’s seen them at the café where some group members go after meetings for coffee. They usually sit as a group, she says, but my husband and this woman have started breaking off from the main crew for private talks at another table.

When I asked my man about her, he was indignant. He said, “I come home to you, don’t I? Isn’t that enough?” Now he claims he’s helping his ex talk through her trauma. That may be so, but he seems way too happy and smug when he finally comes home.

This ex was the first girl he ever had sex with. I know exactly what she meant to him — until she dropped him on his head. So what can I do? I can’t just ignore it and let it go. He’s my husband till death do us part, right?
