Dauphin’s Countryfest has found a fitting replacement for country music legend Merle Haggard, who was scheduled to perform on Sunday, July 3 — the last night of the four-day festival — but died earlier this month on his 79th birthday.

To honour Haggard, Countryfest has put together a special performance featuring his sons, Ben and Noel Haggard, and his longtime band, the Strangers.

Joining them will be two-time Country Music Association Award winner Jamey Jonhson, who performed with Merle Haggard many times.

“You cannot replace an icon like Merle Haggard,” Countryfest promoter Rob Waloschuk says. “We couldn’t think of a better way to pay homage to the life of this prolific singer-songwriter than to have his family and friends perform a tribute concert.”

Weekend, day and camping passes for the festival that begins June 30 are available at www.countryfest.ca, by phone at 1-800-361-7300 or in person at the Countryfest office in Dauphin, 28 2nd Ave. NE.
