Although ABC has been leaking the latest Dancing With the Stars cast member names over the last week to build anticipation for the 21st season (Gary Busey rode a horse on Jimmy Kimmel’s show to announce the news), the network made things official Wednesday on Good Morning America.

This is also the first season without Len Goodman, the strictest judge of all, who announced earlier he won’t be returning to the ballroom with fellow judges Bruno Tonioli, Carrie Ann Inaba and Julianne Hough, and returning hosts Erin Andrews and the always-witty Tom Bergeron.

“One shot of Gary Busey, and I know I’m going to earn my money this season,” Bergeron said on GMA.

The most controversial contestant this time around? Embattled chef Paula Deen. George Stephanopulos noted she’s had a tough couple of years and asked Deen what she hoped to get from the experience.

“A bunch of new friends and maybe lose some weight,” she declared.

Here’s the complete cast list for this season, which kicks off Sept. 14:

  • Alek Skarlatos, National Army Guard Specialist (partnered with Lindsay Arnold). How you know him: he’s one of the three Americans who recently made headlines for heroics on a train from Amsterdam to Paris, when he and his two friends successfully overpowered a man who opened fire.
  • Alexa PenaVega, actress (partnered with Mark Ballas). How you know her: she was a child star in the Sky Kids movies, and now plays Kiley on ABC’s Nashville, the mother of Gunnar’s (well, actually his brother’s) recently-discovered child.
  • Andy Grammer, singer (partnered with Allison Holker). How you know him: the pop singer was recently on stage with Taylor Swift playing Honey, I’m Good, his new single that’s impossible to get out of your head. Before that, he had the equally catchy Keep Your Head Up.
  • Bindi Irwin, animal conservationist (partnered with Derek Hough). How you know her: the 17-year-old Australian is the daughter of the late Steve Irwin and has carried on his legacy as a conservationist. Meanwhile, since she’s partnered with Hough, the producers obviously have high hopes.
  • Carlos PenaVega, singer/actor (partnered with Witney Carson). How you know him: if you have kids and they watch Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush. Oh, and he’s married to Alexa PenaVega, which makes them the first married couple to compete together.
  • Chaka Khan, singer (partnered with Keo Motsepe). How you know her: I’m Every Woman, obviously. And as a music legend.
  • Gary Busey, actor (partnered with Anna Trebunskaya). How you know him: as the strangest actor of our time? Also from many reality-show appearances.
  • Hayes Grier, Vine star (partnered with Emma Slater). How you know him: if you have a Vine account, or know what Vine is. Just know the teens love him.
  • Kim Zolciak Biermann, reality star (partnered with Tony Dovolani). How you know her: not only was she a member of Real Housewives of Atlanta, she’s the mind behind one of the greatest gems of our times, the song Tardy for the Party.
  • Nick Carter, singer (partnered with Sharna Burgess). How you know him: the dreamiest member of the Backstreet Boys, obviously. Who wants to place bets on how early a BSB song will play?
  • Paula Deen, TV chef (partnered with Louis van Amstel). How you know her: as the TV chef who experienced an extraordinary downfall after that racism scandal in 2013.
  • Tamar Braxton, singer/reality star (partnered with Val Chmerkovskiy). How you know her: formerly a backup singer for sister Toni Braxton, she’s now a singer in her own right and star of two WE TV reality shows.
  • Victor Espinoza, jockey (partnered with Karina Smirnoff). How you know him: he finally won the Triple Crown this year with trusty horse American Pharaoh.

The circle of life — garden-sized

5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

“The lesson I have thoroughly learnt, and wish to pass on to others, is to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives.” — Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932), horticulturalist

It’s a chilly day for August — more like fall — but in the garden things are progressing as nicely as if every day this summer had been the perfect combination of sun and showers.

The peonies are spent, their heavy heads with a hangdog look. Soon the petals will fall, revealing the jester-hat seedpods within. The lilacs, too, their beautiful, fragrant blossoms now transformed into brown scruff.

But the day lilies are plumping up, ready for their big reveal. And the roses are still magnificent — dozens and dozens of fuchsia, red, white and coral blooms that turn our stone circle into a heavenly scented bower. It is here where we come after a hard day’s work in the garden, newly scrubbed and wearing fresh clothes, to sit at a little bistro table and have a glass of wine and enjoy the results of our labour.

Put in the work to find fulfilling relationship

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I made it four months without a girlfriend. Although I miss the sex, I have never felt more free! I’ve had overlapping girlfriends since the age of 13, and it’s like having a job for a guy like me. I’m always serving the woman, keeping her happy, giving her what she wants.

After my last break-up in June, I told my best friend I needed to stop serving princesses. He said “Well, you pick ’em! They can see you coming a mile away, and they’re ready.”

I start university this fall, and I swear I’m not going to end up in the same kind of messes with women in my life I always do. There’s a chance to start over, but I don’t know how to be anything different from what I am — a guy like my dad. He totally looks after my mom’s needs — but she loves it, and she looks after him in return.

I don’t know how to be a hard-headed guy who looks out for himself, like a few of my buddies who seem to get what they want with women. But I don’t see them finding any great relationships, either.

Gridlock by design: no excuses for bed backlog

Jason M. Sutherland 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Imagine waking up in a hospital bed and being told by a doctor that you are well enough to leave, only to discover you cannot. Not because you want to stay, but because there is nowhere safe for you to go. No home-care support, no rehabilitation space, no long-term care bed.

This is unfortunately the daily reality for thousands of Canadians.

Being stuck in a hospital bed is a crisis from coast to coast. Our acute care hospitals are functioning as wildly expensive beds for vulnerable citizens awaiting a more suitable place to take them in.

A decade ago, policymakers fretted over this exact issue. Today, despite an aging population with increasingly complex needs and higher demand for hospital beds, the crisis has only deepened.

Missing pet tortoise found at Oak Hammock Marsh

Zoe Pierce 3 minute read Yesterday at 6:58 PM CDT

They were somewhat shell-shocked.

Nobody at Oak Hammock Marsh expected to find an African spurred tortoise wandering through the wetlands. Least of all one that had travelled more than 20 kilometres from home to get there.

But after being missing for two weeks, Molly, a 15-year-old pet tortoise, was discovered tromping around the marsh.

At first, staff thought there had been a case of mistaken identity after visitors started reporting sightings of the animal.
