Munch Madness III: The Famished Four

Decisions, decisions.

If your family is anything like mine, you know heading out for breakfast is like playing a game of 20 Questions: How do you like your eggs? What do you take in your coffee? What kind of bread for your toast? Dry or buttered?

(For the record, my mother-in-law takes her rye toast “well-done, practically burnt,” and almost always has to send it back to the kitchen to be re-toasted, because the cook never seems to believe her the first time round.)

Having reached the midway point of this year’s Munch Madness competition, we spent some time this week conducting important research, ascertaining people’s preferences when it comes to the most important meal of the day.

According to the foodie website Epicurious, 53 per cent of respondents prefer “a runny yolk,” while 47 per cent take their eggs scrambled. When it comes to pancakes versus waffles, 55 per cent opt for the latter. And while nobody will be shocked to learn 75 per cent of the population prefers coffee over tea, or that an equal number choose bacon over sausage or ham, you may be surprised to read bagels are favoured over toast, 54 per cent of the time.

Finally, in the potato category, 50 per cent of those polled chose hashbrowns, while an even number chose “home fries.” (My answer to that: the next time I order fries for breakfast will be the first time.)

Round 2 of Munch Madness proved as compelling as the first week; two contests — the St. B Brouhaha and Southwest Skirmish — were decided by razor-thin margins of 13 and 10 votes respectively.

Now that we’re down to the Famished Four, we’ve re-seeded the Week 2 winners into new pairings.

Same as before, voting began Friday at noon, and remains open until next Thursday at noon. You can vote on every match once per day.

Thursday afternoon we’ll tally the results and let you know which two breakfast joints will battle it out in the final, with the victor announced April 13 in the Free Press.
