Warm up with
a hot beverage
Extravagant toddies, ciders, cocoas and coffees are front and centre during Hot Beverage Week, which kicks off Monday and runs until Saturday, Dec. 10.
The sixth annual event hosted by the Exchange District BIZ will see 17 local restaurants, bakeries, cafés and breweries vying for the title of best hot bevvy over the next six days.
Customers who vote for their favourite drink will be entered into a draw to win a $75 gift certificate for the winning eatery. Cake-ology took the top prize last year with its Blossoming Ruby Hot Chocolate.
Entries this year include a Tiramisu Latte from Harrisons Coffee, a Blueberry Coconut White Hot Chocolate from King + Bannatyne and a Navidad Latte from Más Coffee. Alcoholic creations include the Caribière, a mix of mulled beer and wine, from Nonsuch Brewing Co.; the Salt + Smoke, Laphroig scotch and tea, from Amsterdam Tea Room; and the Spiced Apple Pie, rum and apple, from Cibo Waterfront Cafe.

City names new
poet laureate
Chimwemwe Undi has been announced as Winnipeg’s poet laureate for 2023-24, taking over the role from outgoing poet laureate Duncan Mercredi.
Undi is a Winnipeg poet, editor and lawyer whose writing has been featured in Border Crossings, the Walrus, CV2, Prairie Fire and other publications. In 2022 she was awarded the John Hirsch award for emerging writers at the Manitoba Book Awards.
The city’s poet laureate “creates work that reflects the life of the city, commemorates official functions, and develops their own body of writing and performance,” said the Winnipeg Arts Council in a press release.
“Winnipeg’s arts community has welcomed, encouraged and inspired me since I began writing and performing poetry as a teenager,” said Undi in the press release. “In this position, I hope to amplify and advocate for that community, and to encourage more people to read and write themselves into those spaces.”
Mercredi had served as Winnipeg’s poet laureate since 2020; his term was extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
