For the crowd leaving a Winnipeg Jets or Sea Bears game, big name concert or just a night out downtown, Tavern United was often a familiar stop across from Canada Life Centre.

That longtime routine has now ended with the sports bar’s permanent closure. A notice posted on the door of the Tavern United chain location thanks its now former customers.

“We are grateful for your loyalty, support and memories shared over the years. We hope to welcome you nearby at Resto 12 or at any of our other Tavern United locations across Winnipeg,” the sign reads.

No reason for the closure was listed.

Parent company Canad Corporation of Manitoba Ltd. did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

Tavern United was established in 2003 as a Manitoba-owned sports pub brand, with multiple locations across the city, including the Transcona, Windsor Park, Garden City, Fort Garry and Polo Park areas.

“Businesses need to make decisions that are in the best interest of their operations, and there will always be an ebb and flow downtown,” said Olivia Billson, communications director for Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.

“Tavern United has been in that location for years (and) we thank them for that commitment. Given its proximity to Canada Life Centre and other major investments, I think we’ll see strong interest from others wanting to contribute to a vibrant downtown.”

Shark Club Sports Bar & Grill, about a two-minute walk from the Tavern United spot, is already seeing a ripple effect.

“With the closure of the Tavern, this will definitely be giving us some more business,” said manager Tyler Carswell. “I would say they’re our closest competitor.

“We’ve already seen a small increase in revenues just over our lunches.”

He added Canada Life Centre events, including a Sea Bears game on Tuesday, have brought noticeable spillover traffic.

“Many of our guests were saying, ‘Oh, did you know the Tavern is closed? We tried going to the Tavern, but they’re closed, so we came here,” Carswell said. “It will be really cool to see what happens for the (Winnipeg Jets) season coming up. If there’s nothing put in (the empty space), then I’m very excited to see how much our sales increase.”

Board game company charts winning path

Dennis Northcott has launched a game without frontiers.

The Winnipeg entrepreneur is the co-designer of Galactic Cruise, a board game published last year by Kinson Key Games LLC, the business he co-founded. Since its release, Galactic Cruise has been translated into 11 languages and sold around 50,000 copies worldwide.

It’s also one of three finalists for this year’s Deutsche Spiele Preis, a prestigious community-voted board game award. Northcott will travel to Essen, Germany, later this month, where the winner will be announced at Spiel Essen, an annual board game trade fair.

“It’s been amazing,” Northcott said of the response to Galactic Cruise during an interview in his Island Lakes neighbourhood home earlier this week. “The sales have been great, but it’s also been amazing in terms of people giving their reviews.”

Jets get first win of new NHL season

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:25 PM CDT

DETROIT - The Winnipeg Jets have their first victory of the new NHL season.

Stuart Skinner made 33 saves and the visitors struck three times on the power play to skate away with a 3-2 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Connor led the way with two goals and an assist, while Cole Perfetti had the other tally along with two helpers. Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey chipped in with two assists.

Tyrel Bauer also scored a decisive victory in a fight with Red Wings forward (and Winnipeg native) Keegan Kolesar.

Six high school hockey programs ceased operations following new Hockey Manitoba policy

She lived the best of both worlds.

For the last three years, the 17-year-old wore a sweater for two different hockey programs — her high school team and AAA club in the Manitoba Female Hockey League — and was preparing to flourish in both colours again this winter.

Recently, however, the blue-liner was disappointed to learn she is no longer eligible to play her Grade 12 season with her school owing to a new policy imposed by Hockey Manitoba that bans players from participating in the Manitoba Women’s High School Hockey League if they are rostered on a U18 AAA team.

The rule applies to all athletes who play for both Winnipeg-based and rural AAA teams.

Three could prove an awkward crowd

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My girlfriend and I — two women in our late 20s — are finally getting married.

Previously, we were both living with guys and it didn’t ever work for us. She thinks marriage itself was not her problem, but that guys are basically not suited to “loving” in the special ways two women can love.

So, here I am getting ready to give marriage another go — but with her! She’s a woman who’s a wonderful chef, decorator and a mother of two from her previous marriage. The problem we have as partners? I don’t care for the domestic arts myself — but I’d still like to have a child of my own.

That brings up another issue. I also have a male friend who’d be happy to get me pregnant — an old pal of mine who is a bachelor and would like to be a father and continue being platonic friends with me. He’d also help support the child financially.

Connor powers Jets past Red Wings for first win of season

DETROIT — Kyle Connor is on a mission.

Whether it’s the baby bump from the birth of his second child or his constant mission to elevate his game and find new ways to score, the Winnipeg Jets left-winger is flying out of the gate and seemingly notching goals at will.

After scoring in the season opener for an NHL record ninth consecutive time, Connor delivered a pair of goals and added an assist in his home state to lead the Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena.

“The sheer amount of volume that he gets and how he gets himself in a good spot, he’s able to get that release off from anywhere,” said Jets forward Cole Perfetti. “His first one was just all skill. What a finish that was and then his second one, just reading the play so well. (Coming) off the pads like that, kind of in front of him and he put it in a small little window top shelf that no goalie could ever save. He doesn’t panic when he gets into those spots, obviously.

Province looks to seize notorious drug den

Erik Pindera 5 minute read Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026

Provincial justice officials are trying to seize a Dominion Street drug den that has been the source of trouble in the West End for years.

The owner of 982 Dominion St., 45-year-old Robert Edward Johnson, was most recently arrested in June along with several others after a lengthy Winnipeg Police investigation into thefts and illicit drug sales connected to the house.

“The residence has a reputation within the neighbourhood as being a location where individuals habitually attend for the purpose of purchasing and/or consuming controlled substances,” reads a statement of claim filed by the province’s director of civil forfeiture in the Court of King’s Bench last week.

“For several years, the residence has been associated with criminal activity, violence, and disorder, resulting in numerous police attendances and complaints from members of the surrounding community.”
