There’s a lot to like about the new Hargrave St. Market food hall, which banishes any thoughts of sad mall food courts with its upscale seating, natural light and fresh, interesting food. The kiosks are extensions of popular local venues, including an outpost of Miss Browns, the Exchange District gem known for its first-rate house-smoked meats, and Saburo Kitchen, another offering from the innovative folks behind Yujiro and GaiJin Izakaya.

Saburo concentrates on ramen and donburi, with some very good dishes but also some inconsistencies.

Starters include terrific crispy tofu served with shiitake mushrooms and delicious dumplings, in which nicely seasoned ground pork is wrapped around a whole shrimp. The bao start with quality fillings — we tried the crunchy dark-meat chicken — but the steamed buns were slightly soggy on one occasion.

When it comes to ramen, the peanut-based broth of the tantan option is wonderfully creamy, and the garlic miso broth of the chicken karaage version has lots of umami depth. Add-ins such as marinated egg and chewy pork — hard to handle but delicious — are tasty. Saburo is also generous with the noodles, which were springy and good on one visit but slightly overcooked the next time round.

The gyudon starts with a mound of sticky rice, topped with a beautifully done egg that’s ready to melt into everything. There’s a base of thin-sliced beef and onions, but the characteristic sweet-savoury sauce is aggressively thick and brown and maybe a bit too sweet.

Miss Browns serves up sandwiches, bagels, salads and soups. The menu also relies on three of the best words in the English language — “all-day breakfast.”

Eggs benny is a classic done right. Poached eggs are cooked to your specs — soft, medium or hard — and you can add salmon, vegetables or meat: The house-smoked ham, cut country-thick, is excellent. Everything is piled onto a brioche bun, but it’s so gloriously messy you’ll need to use a knife and fork. Accompanying potatoes, unfussy but perfectly executed, are hefty chunks that are crisped up outside but remain creamy inside.

The shakshuka also features those perfect poached eggs, now in a tomato and red pepper sauce with lots of flavour and body, finished with creamy feta cheese (an optional surcharge add-on).

There are grab-and-go bagels and rotating soup and salad options. Lunch standouts include the hot-pressed, house-smoked brisket sandwich, which is just sublime simplicity, the meat chewy at the edges but very moist, with a kiss of jalapeño heat and some greens a little wilted from the warmth. The accompanying small green salad was light and bright with an unusual and very appealing red pepper vinaigrette.

The new food hall at True North Square includes the enclosed full-service Gusto North (reviewed earlier this month), along with more casual kiosks. This week, we’ll start with Yard Burger and the Good Fight Taco.

If you need a caffeinated pick-me-up, you can get outstanding coffee from Fools & Horses, which does a killer Americano but — unlike some java-centric spots — can also pull off tea-based bevvies, such as an ultra-smooth, not overly sweet London Fog.

The Hargrave St. Market is also licensed, with craft beer from the Lake of the Woods Brewing Company and the long, elegant Rose Bar offering beer, wine and craft cocktails.

Be prepared for a bit of a crush if there are events on at the nearby Bell MTS Place, but the food venues’ efficient buzzer system helps move things along.

Trump’s graceless own goal sabotaged World Cup’s spirit of fair play

Carrie Serwtnyk 7 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

Like many Canadians, I have avoided crossing the U.S. border in the last couple of years. For me, it was a mixture of defiance and uncertainty. What if border guards ask me what I think about President Donald Trump? I would fail the lie detector test.

But the World Cup is going on, and I had a pass for the Seattle stadium. I needed to take advantage of it. After all, I love soccer and I love the World Cup. I see it as one of the great peace movements of our time.

But the irony of travelling to the U.S. for the World Cup wasn’t lost on me. Led by their FIFA Peace Prize-winning president, the country is dropping bombs on World Cup participant Iran. Referee Omar Artan was refused entry into the U.S., where he was to become the first Somali to referee at a World Cup. Fears of ICE raids sent shivers through international communities. Even players were harassed at border points.

It was fair to wonder: what would my experience be like?

Main Street crash involving motorcycle linked to speeding

Morgan Modjeski 3 minute read Yesterday at 8:30 PM CDT

Speed appears to be a factor in a serious four-vehicle collision, including a motorcycle, on Main Street Friday.

Police did not immediately release information about the crash, but at around 7 p.m., a large section of Main Street was taped off between Jarvis and Dufferin Avenue. Traffic was redirected and pedestrians were told to stay clear.

Behind the tape, a crumpled white sedan was smashed into the side of a building, and a damaged motorcycle was on its side in the middle of the street. Two SUVs were also damaged.

The Free Press watched video captured from cameras at the nearby Northern Hotel that shows the two vehicles involved in the crash — the motorcycle that had a rider and a passenger, and the white sedan — speeding side-by-side southbound on Main Street. The speed limit in the area is 50 kilometres per hour.

Order of Manitoba awarded to 12 high-achievers

It was a full circle moment for a CFL superstar whose game included giving back.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris was one of 12 Order of Manitoba recipients honoured at the Manitoba legislature on Thursday.

“It’s an indescribable feeling,” Harris said after the ceremony while holding one of his sons in his arms.

Harris joined Juno award-winning artist Chantal Kreviazuk, Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Joss Reimer, former premier Brian Pallister and others who have enriched the province, said Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville as she honoured the recipients.

Outreach centre rife with drug use, needles, but daycare, community members say safety concerns go unheard

Scott Billeck 7 minute read Yesterday at 5:43 PM CDT

Children at an Osborne Village daycare are routinely exposed to discarded needles, human feces and drug use, prompting growing safety concerns from parents, residents and business owners.

The concerns centre on Augustine Centre at River Avenue and Osborne Street, where SPLASH Child Care shares the building with Oak Table, a drop-in operated by 1JustCity that provides meals, wellness and addiction supports, along with programs that help people build skills, and secure housing and employment.

The daycare looks after 132 children, from just a few months old to age 12.

Lesley Massey, executive director of the daycare, said parents fear for their children’s safety.
