Elwood joined our family 3 years ago. He was in the dark in the back of the pet store and picked bald by the other cockatiels in his cage. Of course, my son picked out the saddest little runt to bring home. Now happy and adjusted – he chatters and sings constantly while playing with his toys. He is the centre of attention and yells indignantly if you leave the room.

Who knew such a small animal could take up so much room in our hearts?

Caper found us late one Sunday night, six years ago in July, as we were sitting around a fire.
He jumped onto my husband’s lap. We needed to head back to the city but this tall, thin sixyear- old tabby needed food and a vet’s attention. He had a tattoo and once we got the go ahead through the Winnipeg Humane Society, he resumed being a city cat. He beats the heat by lounging outstretched on any surface in the house. He loves to travel to the country on weekends but prefers being indoors there.

A friend suggested I enter this photo of my dogs Carl the pit bull and Scarlett the retriever cross snuggling. They are both rescued dogs and bring nothing but joy. Carl is the inspiration behind the recent movement to lift Winnipeg’s pit-bull ban. He is a great spokesdog — loves kids, cats and other dogs and would love to be allowed to visit his grandma in the big city.

Most people have a cat or dog, but my mom in Brandon has more than just them! Among her pets are a goat named Chester and a donkey called Soar. Soar was raised on a bottle as her mother died giving birth. Definitely a people person animal, she loves human company! Whenever Soar sees anyone in the yard on the farm, she comes running! Then once she loses sight of us, all you hear is a lot of hee-hawing. She loves attention and follows us everywhere we go.

Hello there, my name is Sheila. Fran, a friend of my mom Dot, named me after Sheila Copps. I’m just taking a rest from watching all my birds in the feeder. On Mondays, I babysit the birds when my mom Dot goes to D’Arcy’s ARC to give the cats there a little love. Happy 90th birthday, mom Dot.

The good, bad and record setting performance in Bombers loss to Elks

Joshua Frey-Sam 8 minute read Yesterday at 6:50 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ 22-19 defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium in Alberta on Friday was fitting for all the wrong reasons.

The Bombers looked reinvigorated as they jumped out to a 16-point lead in the first half. Then some bad habits reared their ugly head, as the Elks roared back with 19 straight points before kicker Vincent Blanchard walked it off with a 40-yard field goal.

A night that began with so much promise left many fans to wonder what the ceiling actually is for this team in 2026.

On offence, Zach Collaros completed 19 of 30 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and an interception; Brady Oliveira amassed 118 yards on 16 carries and added a pair of catches for 11 yards; and Nic Demski secured five grabs for 80 yards.

Kinew’s message for PM: don’t back down

Let it be known that when Canada’s provinces and alcohol industries needed a defender, Canada’s first First Nations provincial premier was their greatest warrior.

This is, admittedly, a provocative opening line — referencing historical and cultural intersections and relying on a stereotype or two.

It’s impossible, however, not to see how important the nearly Canada-wide provincial-led ban on the sale of U.S. alcohol is to Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.

It’s due to his stand on national matters like these that he’s become very popular — according to polls, the most popular premier in Canada — and has been empowered to take on the mantle of one of the captains of “Team Canada” on economic, political and domestic issues.

Conservatives call on government to release U.S. trade offer details

Nick Murray, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Updated: 3:17 PM CDT

OTTAWA - Federal conservatives are calling on the government to release the full details of the trade offer from the United States that Canada rejected this week.

In a letter to Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Canada-U.S. relations critic Shuvaloy Majumdar said while his party supports the government's decision to reject the deal, Parliament is in the dark on what was on the table.

"If there was a draft text of any agreement that both governments have seen, please release it. The U.S. administration has seen it. Your government has seen it. Canadians deserve to see it," Majumdar wrote.

"Even after addressing Canadians and the media, the public and Members of Parliament still remain in the dark on your government's demands in negotiations with the Trump administration.

From Lars-Erik Sjoberg to Thomas Steen to Viggo Bjorck, there’s no shortage of Swedish athletes who have quickly become fan favourites here in Winnipeg.

Daniel Svard is hoping to add his name to the growing list.

Although he wields a golf club and not a hockey stick, the 23-year-old from Stockholm is opening plenty of eyes this week at Elmhurst. He carries a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Manitoba Open, looking to close out his first professional victory in his just his fourth career tournament.

Svard fired a six-under 66 on Saturday to move to 14-under through 54 holes of the PGA Tour Americas event.

Wooed by wood, Cedarella founder takes pride in handcrafted designs

David Sanderson 8 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

Marina Bulan is the founder of Cedarella, a two-year-old venture that turns out eye-catching wood products such as jewelry, kitchen decor, children’s toys and, most recently, metre-high outdoor planters that double as home street-number indicators.

Ahead of immigrating to Winnipeg a decade ago from their native Russia, Bulan and her partner thought it would be prudent to conduct some research on their soon-to-be new home, a city they knew next to nothing about.

Imagine their surprise as they were viewing the 2007 surrealist film My Winnipeg, which comically blends historical facts about our burg with what Winnipeg-born writer/director Guy Maddin has termed “mystical hypothesizing.”

(For instance, there is no proof that, as reported in the award-winning flick, Winnipeg is the sleepwalking capital of the world, and that residents keep keys to their former abodes on their person in the event they turn up there during a bout of somnambulism.)
