Sandra Benum

Local performer Sandra Benum explained how working in the arts has helped her develop her sense of style, and express herself through dressing on and off the stage. She has always had a flair for costuming and flamboyant looks, taking her performance style and showcasing it in her daily life. “I’ve worked with a lot of talented costumers and really been intrigued by clothing and design — that’s really been important to me,” said Benum, whom we spotted roaming through St. Vital Mall, killing time before her dentist appointment.

COAT — Danier

PURSE — “This is from Shoppers Drug Mart in Calgary.”

CARDIGAN — “This is from Costco — seriously.”

WHITE BUTTON-UP-SHIRT — Joe Fresh, Superstore

NECKLACE — “Holt Renfrew, about 15 years ago in Winnipeg.”

PANTS — “These are from a consignment store in Carman, Manitoba.”

SHOES — “Jones Accessories on Academy.”

EARRINGS — “These are Hilary Druxman — she’s my favourite. If I’m going to buy good jewelry, that’s where I go.”

Fashion essential

“I would say an accessory, whether it is a scarf, a necklace, or bracelet. Accessories are normally really important. I like lots of statement pieces. You can take a really inexpensive outfit and just add a lot of panache with them and it makes it look like a very expensive outfit. This necklace I have on from Holt Renfrew probably cost me, I don’t know, $100 or so but I’ve had it for 15 years so it’s paid for itself.”

Style inspiration

“I’ve always been involved in the arts — I’m actually a performer, I do Rainbow Stage, opera, and I perform with different jazz cabarets and whatnot. I’ve always had a flair for costuming and flamboyant looks so I’ve taken what I wear onstage into my life; it’s just a part of me. I’m not afraid to try different things and be daring and I guess that’s the thing. I’m 56 and people should just have fun and not be afraid of change.”

Fashion tip

“Always wear lipstick and mascara — everything always looks better when your eyes and lips pop. Another tip would be to explore vintage consignment stores. They have great stuff.”
