I’m no meteorologist, so how was I to know it was going to be so warm and sunny last weekend? Not that I’m complaining, of course, because I was able to wear shorts and avoid flipping my closet for at least another precious week, but that said, it has been undeniably chilly the past couple days, especially at night.
Assuming we don’t get a blast of arctic air and an early snowfall, we have a good seven weeks, at least, during which we can don those fabulous fall coats with those cute little trend-setting booties, not to mention an accessory or two to complete the look.
This season’s coats come in all sorts of lengths and colours, cuts and textiles, and while they may vary in texture and length, they have one thing in common — fall coats for 2012 are classic when it comes to style.
To me, nothing says “classic fall coat” better than the mid-length wool peacoat or Paddington. This refined style looks great with everything and is one of those timeless closet staples that will outlast the trends.
When choosing a peacoat, look for one that’s double-breasted with a higher neckline and a bit of a flare. This will allow you a bit of room under the coat for an A-line skirt or a chunkier sweater. This coat looks fabulous with everything but particularly adorable with some sleek leather gloves and a pair of structured riding boots.
Another classic fall style is the waist-cut jacket — it’s definitely trendier than the peacoat, because it often incorporates some stylistic elements such as three-quarter-length sleeves, asymmetrical or oversized collars and belts or ties.
The waist-cut jacket is also a lot more casual than the peacoat, but still dressy enough that you can wear it with a pencil skirt and pair of heeled booties for an urban chic look.
No feature on fall coats would be complete without a mention of the leather bomber or motorcycle-inspired jacket. Always a fashionista pleaser, this style defines city weekend wear to a tee.
When shopping for a bomber or motorcycle-inspired jacket, don’t be afraid to go a bit smaller. This jacket style looks impeccable when worn snugly against the body, showing off your feminine curves and the contour of your waist.
Long or short, wool or leather, a classic fall coat is an imperative addition to any wardrobe.
