HAVE you ever wondered, while flipping through the glossy pages of your favourite fashion mag, what it would be like to design fabulous frocks? Or daydream about being able to create chic clothing collections? Or maybe you’ve just pondered the practicality of acquiring a useful skill like sewing.
Well if you have found yourself deep in thought about the fashion trade then it could be back-to-school time for more than just the kidlings this fall.
Winnipeg is lucky enough to have a fantastic introductory fashion design program geared towards the novice and avid seamstress alike. Murdoch MacKay’s Fashion Technology is one style-savvy program offering courses this fall to assist in making your dreams come true.
As the only vocational fashion program in Canada, Murdoch MacKay Fashion Technology offers students — of all ages I might add, no need to feel shy about applying — the opportunity to learn fashion industry standards in a hands-on environment.
“All courses are based in both a lab hands-on setting and in room-setting theory classes,” says teacher Denise Miller. “Students work backstage at professional fashion shows with professional models and organizers, as well as learn design skills like fashion illustration and pattern-making.”
In addition to the two courses, the Fashion Technology program teaches aspiring designers the ins and outs of basic garment construction — pants, blouses, knitwear and dresses, design application — beading, dying, embroidery and batik and, of course tailoring (that’s reason enough to sign up if you ask this petite fashionista).
“Fashion Technology is great for adult students because it’s condensed into a one-year intensive program and allows those who are interested in a potential career in fashion to get a taste for the industry. It’s a great stepping-off point if further fashion design study is of interest,” says Miller.
And if that’s not reason enough — the first four courses of the eight-course program are offered for free and the remaining four cost about $200 a pop.
