Dear Mike: I found this Winnipeg Free Press thermometer in the basement of my parents’ house, and I thought it would make a great article for your Free Press column. It measures eight inches wide by 39 inches tall (20 centimetres wide by 100 cm tall).
It is marked at the bottom, “Mar. 16 1919 Made in U.S.A.” It works perfectly.
Can you tell me what you think its value would be? –Don D., Winnipeg
Dear Don: The Free Press produced this thermometer in steel with a porcelain finish, which is the one you have, as well as in tin. The tin thermometer is less valuable.
It does have some chips in the finish at the top and bottom, which does affect the value.
Your thermometer in its condition would sell for $400 to $450.
