PIZZA IN A FLASH

Servings: 1-2

Start to finish: 40 minutes (Active time: 10 minutes)

Prepare Ingredients:

1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 (8-inch) naan bread

2 tablespoons pesto

1/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

12 cherry tomatoes, cut in half

Gather Cooking Ingredients:

Pastry brush

Ruler

Rimmed baking sheet

Small spoon

Oven mitts

Cooling rack

Spatula

Cutting board

Chef’s knife or pizza wheel

Make it your way:

To personalize your pizza, sprinkle a handful of your favourite toppings — in whatever combination you like — over the mozzarella. Some topping ideas: sliced bell peppers, pepperoni, sliced scallions, chopped olives, or dollops of goat cheese ricotta cheese.

Start cooking:

Adjust oven rack to lowest position and heat oven to 400 F. Use pastry brush to brush oil into 9-inch circle in centre of rimmed baking sheet. Place naan on top of oil on baking sheet.

Use back of small spoon to spread pesto over naan, leaving 1/2-inch border around edge. Sprinkle cheese over pesto, then sprinkle tomatoes over cheese.

Place baking sheet in oven and bake until naan is golden brown around edges, 8 to 10 minutes.

Use oven mitts to remove baking sheet from oven (ask an adult for help). Place baking sheet on cooling rack and let cool for 5 minutes.

Use spatula to carefully transfer naan to cutting board (baking sheet will be hot). Use chef’s knife or pizza wheel to cut naan into wedges. Serve.

Selfie part of investigation into Grant Park football coach

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Friday, Jul. 24, 2026

A selfie of a high school football coach grinning beside a Free Press front-page story about the investigation into his professional conduct has become part of the case.

Doug Kovacs, a resource teacher at Grant Park High School who runs the Pirates football program, was put on leave in the spring.

The Winnipeg School Division employee is the subject of an investigation into allegations that athletes on his AAAA varsity team engaged in hazing that led to at least one player getting injured last year.

The Free Press has learned that on July 8 — the day it was revealed in print that Manitoba’s teacher commissioner had launched a third-party probe — a photo of Kovacs posing with a newspaper began circulating in the football community.

Vacant Bay store on road to redevelopment, St. Vital Centre owner says

Gabrielle Piche 6 minute read Friday, Jul. 24, 2026

Entertainment attractions are coming to fill the former Hudson’s Bay space in St. Vital Centre.

Montreal-based real estate firm Leyad, the south Winnipeg mall’s owner, says it is finalizing an agreement for the vacant property. Further details should appear in the next couple months, said president Henry Zavriyev.

“We’re looking at what other types of experiences we can bring to the mall that aren’t just typical retail,” he said during a visit to Winnipeg this week.

“We want to create an experience where you can just come to the mall, hang out here for hours, no matter if you’re a kid, an adult, a retiree.”

A Life's Story: Beloved matriarch, kindergarten teacher lived a musical life

Phyllis Dana faced a choice: leave Winnipeg to study opera at a prestigious Philadelphia school, or marry the man she loved.

She chose the latter.

Now, her Juno-winning granddaughter cherishes a Happy Birthday voicemail sung by Phyllis. Three generations of Dana women — Phyllis, her daughter, and granddaughter — would sing in Winnipeg’s prominent Jewish spaces. And hundreds of Manitobans know the matriarch as their kindergarten teacher.

“My mom said, ‘A sheet of music won’t keep you warm at night,’” Karen Dana recalled.
